Doom needs no introduction. It was created by John Romero who was part of ID Software in 1993 for the MS-DOS, and this popularized the first person shooter (FPS) genre. Many doom-clones were made from this, and to this day there is still a large community dedicated to playing it, even modding it. It spawned a series with tons of sequels, most notably the 2016 reboot that once again popularized the series.
As a millennial and a pretentious hipster, this will be my first time going through this. It's frankly embarrassing that I haven't before. With this I explore how the gameplay differences are for something made this long ago compared to the more modern fps games. I also explore the later releases of this, specifically a new version of E1M8 that John Romero created in 2016, and Sigil, an unofficial 5th episode also created by John Romero.
Did this still age well? Especially for someone who has no nostalgic lens for this? Find out here.
