Amid Evil with virtual surround sound (CMSS-3D Headphone)
Use headphones only with any virtual surround features turned off.
In my F.E.A.R. 2 video, I proposed a hypothesis on CMSS-3D's virtual surround: in games using both XAudio2 and X3DAudio, the positional sound accuracy with CMSS-3D can be just as good as with OpenAL or the deprecated DirectSound3D.
Since Amid Evil runs on Unreal Engine 4 and UE4 uses XAudio2 + X3DAudio by default, I had the perfect game to test out this theory. As it turns out, I was 100% correct. Even though there's no hardware acceleration being used, CMSS-3D Headphone is still able to use X3DAudio to provide true 3D sound that's on-par with the best DS3D and OpenAL games I've demonstrated so far. It seems there is still a sliver of hope for high-quality HRTF sound in modern PC games. Now if only Unity would implement this API; maybe Dusk would sound this kickass as well.
Contrast this video with my Doom 3: BFG Edition test, which used XAudio2 but NOT X3DAudio and wound up having horrible, flat sound with CMSS-3D Headphone.
