By Toutatis! Someone adapted my favourite comic into a game that I like! (And yes I know there have been Asterix games in the past, but I wasn’t aware of most of them until recently.)

And apparently, this game was so successful that it got a sequel which was released last week! Hooray!

This is a side-scrolling beat-em-up that’s quite simple, but with enough depth to still be entertaining. This video- which takes place on the shores of Britain as part of the “Asterix In Britain” storyline- shows a good variety of enemies that require different approaches to dispose of efficiently. As usual I went out of my way to show off all the gameplay mechanics, which worked for most of the level but also resulted in some weird moments where Asterix stands perfectly still in an attempt to demonstrate his ‘block’ against enemies that took longer than expected to attack him.

Having good gameplay is important, but the best thing about this game is how accurately it captures the look and feel of the comics. I can’t remember the last time a game made me laugh as much as this one did when Obelix was repeatedly slapping enemies, or when Asterix was swinging someone around to clear out groups of enemies, or when either character was knocking a Roman out of their sandals (which you can then pick up for bonus points!). If you have any familiarity with the comics then you’ll know why this stuff is a big deal.

So yeah, that’s Asterix & Obelix: Slap Them All. If you’re a fan of the franchise and you don’t wishlist this game then you’d have to be as crazy as those Romans are! And you’ll also annoy Taranis! And [insert any other random Asterix references you can think of here]!
