Red Dead Redemption 2 PC - i5 4690K & GTX 1070 - FPS Test and Settings
Greetings, everyone.
Today we’re finally testing Red Dead Redemption 2, and by now most of you are probably aware that this release hasn’t particularly been smooth, on the contrary it’s been plagued with problems.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-Edit (13/11/2019): Rockstar has officially spoken about the issues still present in the game: https://twitter.com/RockstarGames/status/1194669204802281476?s=20 , it seems a patch is coming on the 13th, and more to come in collaboration with Nvidia, so good news at least, and hopefully all the issues are resolved by then.

Well, I’ll try making it short: the Rockstar Games Launcher sucks; the game released 3 days ago, I had it pre-loaded, and on release day my launcher didn’t even start the game. It remained like that for 2 days, and finally on the 7th a patch for the launcher was released that, fortunately, allowed me to finally get into the game. If only that could’ve been the end of the issues…ah, how naïve of me…nah, the game has plenty extra issues once you’re lucky enough to get in (because I’m well aware some people cannot launch the game yet, several launcher patches after…they’ve yet to completely wipe that problem from existence).
The main issue with the game, is that it still can crash by just browsing menus, interacting with the UI (which has clearly been copy-pasted from console in a very low effort way), or just switching graphical settings…the game is not stable at all.
The other main, big, issue is the fact it plainly murders 4 core CPUs, in a very strange way, the game on my system, even with the frame-rate uncapped, it’s just using 60-70% CPU cores and then, suddenly, decides to explode and shoot all the cores up to 100% for literally seconds; sometimes it’s just a small hiccup, other times is just the whole system frozen, completely. That to me is very strange, to say the least, because I own and have played other big games that destroy any CPU out there, on this CPU of mine, and whenever any of those games (AC Odyssey/Origins, The Division 2, etc.) is using a lot of CPU power, even if all of my cores get to 100%, the PC won’t implode, it simply becomes a little stutter and the frame-rate gets a penalty, but then just reducing some settings or capping the FPS usually makes the issue go away.
That said…I’m still expecting client patches for this game, and launcher fixes for sure, many people cannot play, and those who can are experiencing different types of issues. A shame, because the game seems to be really good once you get into it a bit.
Although I’m very disappointed with the bad PC controls, they’re not über terrible…but they’re not ideal, and they’re really cumbersome at times; considering how simple the control scheme is on gamepads…I don’t understand this.
In any case, I hope this can be useful to any of you, and I’ll see you next time : )
