Bravely Default: Session 8 -- Mopping Up and Moving On
Last time we've awakened the fire crystal, but before we get a move on, I want to mop up the remaining commanders of the Black Blades.
First things first, let's go back to Starkfort, where the locked door to the north has opened up. At the top is Kamiizumi and the leader of the Swordbearers, a coward named Astrae who leaves before we can meet with him. There are some emotions when we confront him, namely his regret about his failures, Edea's righteous anger, things like that. Then, we fight.
As a boss, Kamiizumi's biggest threats come in the form of counterattacks. If you're familiar with other Final Fantasys, you know that typically means don't use Attack or don't use physical skills. This guy can counter magic, though, so basically, no tool you have is truly safe, unless he can't act. Fun, right?
The prize he yields, the Swordmaster asterisk, gives us the ability to do the same. I called most of the command skills they get stances, but they're really more like predictions. Use the right one, and not only will you take less damage from enemy attacks, you'll also react with amplified damage. The more advanced predictions are narrower in scope, but the damage multiplier on your counter goes up, too.
With that settled, it's off for a detour. The short version is, Karl, the innkeep in Caldisla, is in such a state that his inn may go out of business. We're taking Egil to stay with him, partly because Ringabel's journal says so, but mostly because Tiz thinks it'll lift his spirits. In the end, it works out just fine.
Back in Hartschild, we've got another sidequest. When we arrive at the Goodman residence, we find Daniel is at home for once for a banquet that Agnès wants to hold--she even sent out invitations! Except... Agnès doesn't remember doing such a thing. But Eleanor has gone to so much trouble, we can't just let it go to waste, right? And our other guests have arrived: Steiner and Neuer, the top two officers in the Shieldbearer army!
But wait! What's this? There's an anonymous death threat against Goodman! And then the new servant girl, Nastassja, is found dead! Folks, we got a murder mystery on our hands. And it just so happens that the door is locked from the outside. The killer is among us!
Who could it be? No one seems to have a motive! At least, no one present. There are rumors, though. Neuer thinks Steiner is so career-focused that he wants nothing short of the top spot in the Shieldbearers. Steiner thinks Neuer is just trying to frame Eleanor because she's in love with Goodman. Neither is exactly a smoking gun, so we have some tea poured by Eleanor, and... oops, there goes Steiner.
Eleanor swears up and down it's not her, but not even Goodman can deny that things look bad, so it's off to the cellar for Eleanor. With a little more discussion, the lights go out, and, welp, down goes Neuer. With her dying words, she says a woman attacked her. Well, the only woman left in the place is Eleanor. Surely there's a secret passage she had built, right? And in the interrogation, Ringabel has a realization. There's one other woman in the building.
It's Nastassja, the victim! She wasn't a victim after all! She's also not Nastassja. She's Konoe Kikyo, leader of the covert forces of the Black Blades, and killer of the fire vestal. If only we had realized it sooner...!
But did Steiner and Neuer really have to die? Turns out, nope! If you're thorough, you might examine the corpse. Something about it is bothering Ringabel, though he can't say what. Keep inspecting, and you get the same "......" message over and over. Keep it going, and Kikyo reveals herself.
As a boss, Kikyo is all about high speed and high evasion. When she dodges an attack, she counters, and she can give herself a status that automatically dodges the next physical attack. She also has a priority attack, and she can hit fairly hard.
But when it's all over, we get the Ninja asterisk, which means we finally get access to proper dual wielding. We can also (eventually) get access to skills that manipulate aggro, reward completely dodging enemy attacks, and even raise hit counts.
After that, it's off to Grandship, which is... sinking! Bad! Turns out, we're gonna need some orichalcum (hey, Egil) and take it to the engine room deep below the decks. Once we do, the ship will rise! In fact, it'll rise into the air!
And just like that, the world is now our oyster! With enough space, we can land and take off anywhere! It's not even bound to a landing spot, so you can land in Ancheim, walk to Florem, and take off there! So convenient. And hey, now we can get to Eternia!
But that'll be next time. Thanks for tuning in!
