Bravely Default: Session 11 -- Time For a Divine Pulse! ...Wait
So, when we last left off in the main plot, we had awakened all the crystals, and somewhere in the world appeared a Holy Pillar, shining brilliantly with the First Light. We have to bring Airy there and fill her brooch with the light, and then she can spread its power across the world and wash away the darkness that has consumed it, even filling in the Great Chasm!
But before we can get there, we have one final obstacle: Dark Knight Alternis Dim. As you may recall, he left Eternian Central Command at the behest of the Grand Marshal to stop us if worse came to worst. Well, he's still convinced that we're not about to save the world, so it's time to fight.
As an opponent, Alternis Dim shows off the fundamentals of the Dark Knight job. They can sacrifice their own HP to cast a powerful dark attack on one or all opponents, and the more hurt they are, the more damage they can do with their Minus Strike. It's a good thing we got the Templar job first, because Rampart is extremely handy.
As is befitting a job edgy enough to turn their own pain into offense, they favor katanas as their best weapon (as well as regular swords), as well as helmets (to mask their anguish, I guess). They also have a passive ability where, for every 25% of their HP they take, they get a buff to their attack and defensive power.
Anyway! Alternis is defeated and his helmet is split, revealing... he looks just like Ringabel!? And with the shaking of Grandship, he drops a journal that... looks just like D's journal!? Before we can get any answers out of Alternis, the rumbling knocks him overboard. All that's left is to hold on as Airy finishes her task. A bright light envelopes the party, and...!
Suddenly we're back in Caldisla. The innkeep, Karl, rouses Tiz out of bed and thanks him for offering to deal with the Eternian Sky Knights who set that house on fire. He thought it was a dream, but Agnès, Edea, and Ringabel are there too, and they all remember what happened.
And yet, from all appearances, they're back at the start of their journey, before awakening the crystals! The seas are rotten, the Great Chasm is still a great chasm, and... well, that's all we can tell from here, but we can assume it's all awful again.
(As for what's going on with Ringabel? He still needs time to process it.)
Anyway, there's only one thing to do, and that's try awakening the crystals all over again. Hey, what's that noise outside? Why, it's Datz and the Grandship! Somehow, they managed to come with us. Even if all our work has been undone, at least we still have the kind of flight that gives us unfettered access to the world!
And speaking of the world... there are a lot of sidequest markers on the map, aren't there? Those are all rematches against asterisk bearers. So, here's a little bit of game history for you. This game you see here is actually the second edition. The game was originally only released in Japan as "Bravely Default: Flying Fairy," and after collecting a lot of player feedback, they released an updated version called "Bravely Default: For The Sequel." This new version came with a ton of improvements, and the most relevant one for this video is: they made those asterisk holder rematches optional. Yes, that's right, the original version of the game required you to fight all these bosses again. Anyway, this new and improved version is what was eventually brought to the rest of the world as "Bravely Default: Where The Fairy Flies."
Of course, you could just make a beeline straight for the temples and awaken the crystals, but I personally see some value in the rematches, so we're gonna see them! If nothing else, they're a great source of EXP and JP, but they often give more insight into the asterisk bearers themselves.
So, for the next good while, things are gonna look awfully familiar! That's just the way this game goes. I hope you see it through to the end.
After all, you promised way back at the beginning, didn't you?
