Bravely Default: Session 10 -- Here Be Dragons, And Here, And Here, And...
0Alright, folks, it's sidequest time!
Off to the west of Central Command is a place called, uh, Vampire Castle. You'll never guess who lives there. But before we can go there, we gotta go find keystones. Six of them, in fact. They're scattered around the world and guarded by dragons, too. Great!
The dragons themselves are formidable, but not impossible. They also all have very similar movesets, so once you get into the rhythm, they should be easy enough. Each dragon has an element, and they'll use a "_______ Eye" move to make you weak to it, even overwriting your defense against it. They also have a physical elemental attack that, naturally, targets your new weakness and sometimes--not always--inflict a status ailment. Skills like Utsusemi and Rampart will protect you from damage.
Beat them all and take the stones to Vampire Castle, and we get to learn about Lester DeRosso and what his whole deal is. It starts 2400 years ago, in the Kingdom of Eternia. House DeRosso had a lot going for them: a good relationship with the royal family, beloved by the people, that sort of thing, and Lester was no exception to it. They were dedicated to serving the king and their people as dukes, and at 19, Lester was made a cleric of the Crystal Adventists, which Agnès knows as the Old Faith.
Shortly after that, there grew a new faction among the Adventists who believed that there should be a single body that controlled the four crystals, rather than leaving it to the local rulers. This would be Crystal Orthodoxy. The King of Eternia agreed, and for his support, Lester DeRosso was named a cardinal in this new faith.
The cardinals would then gather to select a grand patriarch to lead this new faith. Another cardinal approached Lester to bribe him for his vote, and Lester, young and idealistic as he was, rejected him outright. That other cardinal's side ended up winning, and Lester was forced out of his position.
After that, the Orthodoxy laid siege to Eternia, wiping out the royal family. They then attacked the castle of House DeRosso, leaving the people no chance to escape. Lester offered to surrender, but the man leading the attack was that same cardinal from before, and in his bitterness, he rejected the surrender and killed... pretty much everyone. As the last one alive, Lester set the castle ablaze, but he heard a voice promising him immortality to wreak vengeance. He survived the flames and disappeared.
When the Orthodoxy couldn't find his body, they claimed he and his family weren't human but instead vampires, hence the name Vampire Castle. Lester
decided to roll with the accusation, and spent his time learning to transform into a bat and grow fangs, and he began his own war with the Orthodoxy, starting with assassinating the first grand patriarch.
500 years later, the political power of the Orthodoxy was fading. They resorted to fear to maintain control, and appointed a talented young man, a commoner, to the position of High Inquisitor to sniff out and eliminate enemies of the Orthodoxy. That man was none other than Yulyana, and over several decades, he and DeRosso clashed many times. Their battles were so fierce that they reshaped the very land itself.
During their final battle, after 100 days of fighting, an angel suddenly appeared, and she was deeply wounded. DeRosso and Yulyana stopped fighting to tend to her, and she gave shockingly accurate accounts of history, and then the future. She warned of the darkness that would sweep the land, and told them what signs to look for. Unfortunately, she passed away before she could tell them who laid the trap she fell into.
DeRosso and Yulyana put an end to their fighting so they could watch for the warning signs. For his part, DeRosso agreed to concede the battle, and Yulyana took some monster remains as a trophy of his victory. DeRosso retired to Eternia to watch over the central Orthodoxy church, and Yulyana was named archbishop.
Yulyana saw the corruption of the Orthodoxy firsthand, so he schemed to rob them of power as well. He created the asterisks as an alternative to the job system the Orthodoxy controlled. He held a public demonstration (so they couldn't go back to the old way) and proposed it as an alternative system. They put him in charge of it, then he took the asterisks and ran away, giving out jobs to whoever wanted them for no charge at all and tending to the vestals ever since.
15 years ago, the Orthodoxy wanted to conduct a forbidden ritual to regain power. DeRosso and Yulyana wanted to focus on the warning signs, but a young templar named Braev believed the ritual would bring about cataclysm. So, Braev marched on the Orthodoxy and won, and used that to establish the modern Duchy of Eternia, naming DeRosso as its archduke.
So, uh, yeah! That's DeRosso's whole deal!
