Despite some talk in recent years about Call of Duty's waning significance as a triple-A juggernaut of the FPS genre, the series continues to make a mark on the release schedule year after year. Having already launched a a WW2 refresh as well as a Modern Warfare reboot, logic dictates that it's time for a new Black Ops game (now with extra synthwave!).

To the developer's credit, there are clear attempts to spice things by including several unusually slow-paced spy-based campaign missions to reinforce the supposed theme of the game. However, the end result actually just makes me a bit impatient, since it's the fast-paced action set pieces that you expect from a CoD title.

As usual with this franchise, the dour machismo and unrelenting paranoia of the main characters makes it hard to relate to anyone in the story on anything approach a human level, and it didn't take long for the convoluted plot to lose me completely. That said, the game looks quite nice on the Xbox Series X and lets you shoot people in all sorts of exotic environments, so I guess it's a decent experience all things considered...
