Digimon HM No Digivolution Part 13: Craniamon, 3x Eater, Matadormon (K)
Challenge playlist:
• Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth: Hacker's ...
Three more Chapter 14 battles, in which our party is enhanced by the joining of several new Digimon who may well stay with us for the remainder of the run (after the brief chapter 15 with its one grand scripted battle, it's just three chapters of the game left after this).
0:00 Craniamon
Craniamon is an extremely powerful Vaccine opponent, and with out Data piercer, the recently scanned Mega Plesiomon only having multi-target medium-modifier piercing damage, we don't have much hope of really inflicting any good damage against him while surviving his attacks, which are fierce.
I employ the strategy I thought about a long time ago, bugging the boss with Character Reversal (70% chance to connect) in order to switch to a Virus party that's normally at a disadvantage. It works on the first attempt. Then the familiar Phantomons, who are strong glass cannons that die to a breeze, are joined by the recent scannee - GranKuwagamon. An endgame walloper from the OG CS run is back to kick ass and take names. Its piercer modifier is said to be weaker than Phantomon's in the move description but factoring in higher Mega stats and 20 additional levels of growth ends up outdamaging Phantomon's. Unlike Okuwamon's Neutral special, it can occasionally also deal super-effective damage to Aquatic Plant-weak foes.
You'd think we're safe with Character Reversal in effect, but that couldn't be far from the truth. The Phantomons need constant revival maintenance, probably needing the 750 extra HP from accessories more than the SkullSatamons we used to bug the boss very briefly in the initial stages of the fight, and even GranKuwagamon himself is in danger of dying.
The kicker? The boss's move, Waltz's End, is a NEUTRAL move that deals THIRTY FIVE damage three times. How it gets so powerful in this battle is beyond me, but it turns him into something of a superboss.
3:18 3x Eater
An easier Eater battle with two fewer Humanoid enemies. Whereas MegaKabuterimon failed to OHKO the Purebreed Eater with Horn Buster, Plesiomon can OHKO both Purebreed Eaters with its piercing special (which also sleeps in normal battles sometimes), weakening the remaining one. It's just food for GranKuwagamon and Phantomon at that point. GranKuwagamon gets its SP drained early on in the battle however, missing the SP needed for that last fatal Dimension Scissor. Its normal move is powerful enough.
5:11 Matadormon (K)
K is revealed to be the feared Matadormon, who is apparently supposed to be a fabled tactician, repeatedly inflicting confusion on the party while lowering their defence but also increasing their attack. As GranKuwagamon champions physical piercing right now, giving everybody Panic Barriers DX sets him up to be the best fighter here. SkullSatamon's fractional damage reigns supreme for the first couple turns, but since it's based on current - not max - HP, its damage takes a dive pretty soon, causing me to switch two MegaKabuterimons in instead. As you can see, when he's not wasting turns powering GranKuwagamon up, he's a menacing attacker capable of putting a dent into nearly anyone.
