Doom Wads/Mods #469:Decade
https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/Ports/d-f/decade Large maps can make or break wads for me if they repeat the same patterns or drag on for too long, for all I respect Espi and his Episode Replacement Back to Basics, its maps ran on for much longer than I actually wanted to accept. So in this 2004 cacoaward's case its the last one I find polarizing of the material selected for this season as it DOES have a lot of quality to it but there's some stuff that rubs me the wrong way in this wad.
Decade was released on September 22nd 2004 by Russell Pearson who also authored Null Space and Doom Raider among other wads, Decade is a massive UAC Facility overflowing to the gills with hellspawn while taking inspiration from maps such as Dead Simple, Entryway, and Hell Keep across a map that, post video, took me nearly 3 hours 50 minutes to clear which should tell you how large and detailed Decade is.
For 2004, Decade's mapping is very impressive, and this was one year before HeDRoX so to see this, is amazing with every possible kind of slope and map change to make the UAC base look more than just a typical Doom 1 or Doom 2 techbase map, and it also has a sharp switchblade trick with Pearson placing very nasty traps with monster closets springloaded like a party popper to go off throughout this large map while teleport traps serve to box you in quite a few times after these monster closets burst open so it is a tough map yes.
Decade's rough spots are abusing the monster closets in the late part of the map, At this point we have every weapon aside from the BFG9000 and ooh boy.. Things get nasty fast, I also don't appreciate the ammo placement, it feels though as Pearson made Decade for speedrunners above the difficulty Hurt Me Plenty and the amount of sniper hitscanners makes every hit that much more frustrating when only health bonuses are located throughout most of the wads early part, In spite of that Decade shows so much creativity vs the other 2004 wads that itself was remade by Pearson in 2019 with newer decorate features which should tell you how important this wad is.
