Doom Wads/Mods Rise Of The Revisits #28:Plutonia 2
https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/megawads/pl2 Time sure flies when you are having fun. Nearly 28 years have passed since Doom was released and throughout that time, It's carved out a huge modding base that shows no sign of stopping with its sequel Doom II coming out in 1994 and Final Doom, made of two wads TNT Evilution and Plutonia Experiment being released in 1996. Some wads that I remember are aging gracefully too, with this release being 14 years old since its release.
Specifically, a community project, Plutonia 2 was released on December 31rst 2008 and at the 2009 cacoawards it was not only one of the winners but also honored with the mordeth award for the longest development time starting well back in 2001. The storyline was written by Plutonia 2 team member Myk (Miguel Folatelli) which picks up where Plutonia Experiment ended.
In question, after we've defeated the gatekeeper who held the quantum accelerator prototypes, A criminal investigation into the UAC is launched leading to the imprisonment of the remaining staff. Now, the UAAF or Union Aerospace Armed Forces is in charge of protecting Earth from Hell with a new device named the Hallion Collider. Doomguy, the current lead of the UAAF loses his standing when his enemies lead a coup against his reputation, hell soon attacks and a civil war between demon and demon and human and human begins, So now with everything going pear shaped, It's time to stop hell's invasion once more.
The burning sensation that you remember well from Plutonia Experiment is back with Plutonia 2 though it takes a while to get up to that speed with the first 7 maps being the beginners walk, and throughout Plutonia 2, the many nods to what inspired it are obvious with several maps "Go 4 It", "Enemy Caught", "Arch-Violence", and "Where Hate Runs Red" all combining elements that you remember from the Plutonia Experiment. In addition, the new tracks by Jamie Robertson, Jimmy (His overall, first major project he scored music on), Eric Baker, Stewboy, Pcrof and Julian Aubourg feel much more upbeat and sinister vs the default music of Plutonia Experiment.
There are only two overall issues that Plutonia 2 has which does reduce its scoring with me despite how much I play it. Ammo placement could've been a lot better as going through this megawad on Hurt Me Plenty or above requires you to balance ammo and sometimes berserk punch mid-tier high tier enemies in cramped locations, this usually isn't a problem but there's so many corridors, and small rooms in the last episode that it becomes hazardous to get up close, the last episode itself is not for the faint of heart as it goes full speed with many slaughter like maps with ammo balance still being a issue, This being said I still think Plutonia 2 is a tour-de-force and worthy of the two awards it earned.
[[This is the 2nd Megawad I've revisited 3 times and it'll likely, be the last one that I do (for now). Of the about 25 wads I've completed so far on Hurt Me Plenty, Plutonia 2 was the 8th one and it was not pleasant back in 2019 as I had done it keyboard only via the Doom95 Launcher first and then on Zdoom with "strict" enabled. That was a mistake as Plutonia 2 abuses the monsters above and below you mechanic to block you so often it was impossible to make running jumps.
The original episode that featured this wad I'll confess was one that I didn't like, I was suffering from a sinus infection and was determined to finish that episode before sleeping but it lasted an hour, many bad takes and of the first 3 seasons, It was my least favorite episode, I consider it to be my worst because of how I rushed it. I've learned that good things can't be rushed.
