Fire Emblem Path of Radiance Girls Only HM: Chapter 8 - Despair and Hope
Aaaand... the challenge has begun.
I suppose I still haven't stated the rules?
- only females can be fielded, with some exceptions
- Ike is forced in every map and is needed to seize some maps and talk to people, but he shouldn't fight or be given experience.
- using thieves to lockpick and steal is fine as long as we don't train them as combat units. Unequipping them is a bad idea because if they do have some knives equipped, the enemy might prioritise hitting Astrid (who lacks enemy phase for a while) instead. As long as they don't attract enemy attacks, it's fine to use them for utility.
- Laguz females (that is, just Lethe and Ena) are in.
- Fixed Mode, Hard difficulty.
Now I like the randomness of growths in Fire Emblem since you get different units each time you play, but with this game's BEXP system it's too easy to abuse your time at the base to create monsters out of your characters with some generous BEXP investments, especially your fliers. If we play Fixed Mode, we won't get blessed or screwed over in growths, either.
I suppose that's about it.
We officially begin the All Female challenge with chapter 8, which is not an easy chapter at all with our army numbers. Sure, Titania can take on large groups of enemies on her own still, but she can't be everywhere on the map simultaneously and we have huge crowds of enemies attacking us from all three sides at once. The main problem here is that Titania isn't omnipresent. However, her turns can be managed in such a way that she destroys a lot of enemies on each, which is possible, except killing everything isn't the only thing we want.
We don't just want to defend for all 8 turns however, as we should also recruit Ilyana, who will be our first mage in this challenge. She's not terribly good and she has trouble doubling things more than Soren would, but thunder magic is good enough in this game and when she does score a critical hit with it (not terribly unlikely), it won't leave the enemy alive, that's for sure. Ilyana's problem is her low rank in magic (E in fire and wind isn't cool, considering Calill will join with Cs everywhere, capable to use Meteor, Blizzard and Bolting right off the bat). I'm thinking I should promote Ilyana early with a Master Seal so that she can start building her staves rank and make use of Physic later on. Mist and Ellincia will have Canto and superior movement later on, but it doesn't hurt to have a healer who can actually fight.
Besides recruiting Ilyana (who will never attack us on enemy phase), we also want to give Titania the boss kill, and grab some items from the enemies, most notably the Red Gem held by a Priest in the south of the map not too far from the boss. There's also Pure Water and Longbow, neither of which I managed to get. Pity about the former, but there's nobody in this challenge to equip a Longbow anyway (Astrid can't wield it).
I gave Mia some kills in the previous chapter and a few levels worth of BEXP in the preparation phase so that she's a little more potent. However, since I play on Fixed Mode, I can't be blessed with better level-ups so she will never quite become a monster in this run.
And I can't believe how much magic Mia had when I placed her on the right side of the map. She should be taking two hits each turn, one from a Knight (really hurts, but can miss) and one from a Longbow Archer. Her attack speed gives her excellent evasion so with some luck she shouldn't die.
I was feeling a little ballsier than usual, so I started beating up those Knights on player phase when I thought it wouldn't be such a crazy idea to do so and look what I got - 3 people attacking Mia on enemy phase later on. She still survived somehow, and got a lot of experience as a result. Sometimes evasion is THE defence in this game. Too bad Mia doesn't get any Evasion increases through supports in this challenge (since we're not using Largo).
Ike shouldn't fight in an all girls challenge, but we have to place him somewhere anyway, because otherwise enemies will get into our territory and the mission will be failed. It is possible to place Ike in such a way that nobody will be able to attack him, if you provoke an Archer to take the only space adjacent to him.
So we got Ilyana, a boss kill, a Red Gem, and one hell of a dodging performance from Mia. Some epic evasion hax there. Pretty fun.
