FFTA2 - 0 Exp Game Part 6: Rumors Abound & Sleepless Nights
Finally Cid joins the party, and he's about as welcome as Thunder God "Orlandu" Cid is in the original FFT.
Now, in a normal game Cid is a pretty unremarkable unit. His Warrior bases make him slower than generic Master Monks, and his magic stat makes him a poorer long-range Ultima user (since Ultima attacks are now magical in contrast to FFTA's) than the generic Bangaa you could hire and train. All he has going for him is his sprite which doesn't look like a Bangaa at all, aside from that... He doesn't get his own skillset, like Penelo or Adelle, nor does he equip a Ribbon (Adelle and Frimelda are unique female humes who can) without having to master a specific passive ability for it.
Things are noticeably different in this challenge, because Cid joins at a time when the party average is a pitiful lv. 5, which is too little this far into the game. Cid's fixed level is 20, so if we fire everybody besides him, Adelle and Luso (who's probably stuck at lv. 1 for good, unless there's an instance where you have to gain more than 99 exp per battle that I can't remember), the clan average will be quite a bit better - lv. 10. After the battles shown in the video, I did go out of my way to hire higher-levelled units, even though I had intended to do it after Hurdy's jointime. Because soloing with Cid isn't that easy in some optional maps.
In this video I show the first two storyline maps fought with Cid in the party, and a major theme in both of them is the abundance of undead enemies. I wanted to make things harder for myself so I tried to beat the missions without using items on the enemies. Something like an X-Potion sends the undead back to their graves, and even the Oversoul boss in the second chapter is sent to critical health. Without that option, the missions are quite a bit harder, and also luck-reliant.
Here I use 3 Archers as vanquishers of the undead - Luso, Adelle and a generic hume. The hume is actually a former Black Mage so he's got pretty poor durability, but so does Luso (lv. 1 soldier bases). Archers are masters of statuses in the FFTA world and they have Burial, which has decent chances of removing the undead entirely. Its chances can be upped with the Agility UP privilege, but I'd rather have Power boosts to increase Cid's melee damage and lower the damage I have to deal with myself.
My other units are a moogle with Haste (he could gamble-haste the whole party too, but that's risky and not really necessary), and a Viera Green Mage healer/debuffer. If she puts something undead to sleep, we get a 100% chance to connect Burial before it wakes up. Debuffs are forbidden in the second map though, so she just casts Cure spells on the enemies for decent MT damage.
In the first mission, the undead you should take out first is the differently coloured one. It's not a boss so it's not immune to KO, and when it gets enough MP, it will spam Darkra, which will probably OHKO Luso and the Archer guy or at least get him close enough to KO range. Cid gets hasted and starts slowly pounding away at the other enemies.
I haven't unlocked Master Monk yet (the mission for it is a little too hard right now, maybe once I get Hurdy I'll give it another try), so right now Cid is a White Monk with Shieldbearer and two Platinum Shields, which gives him nice 25% evade. He deals decent enough damage without any weapons thanks to being a White Monk. When he gets access to Master Monk later on, both his unarmed damage and evade will increase even further (and we'll be getting better shields by endgame too).
In the second map, the Oversoul boss can be a pain in the arse, as it will restore its own health with Darkga (or was it Darkra?). It won't have the MP to do it every turn though, so if we haste Cid, his damage will prevail over the boss's healing. Archers get rid of the other enemies (Burial doesn't count as a debuff) in the meantime and the Green Mage could help with healing/damaging the undead.
After this map, I went to hire some lv. 10 units. I don't know if I want to train them since Hurdy joins after the next storyline map(-s), increasing the clan average even higher. It's kinda annoying to have to grind AP up just to say goodbye to your trained units when their level is just abysmally low for the current point in the game.
