FFTA2 - 0 Exp Game Part 5: Mountain Watch & Grounded!
The next two storyline maps after Flowsand Lord and just before Cid joins the party at the fixed level of 20 are pretty hard, made easier by the fact that those are 'defeat boss' missions.
In the first one we face Ewan who takes away our clan privilege. I am partial to Power Up 3 myself (so as not to take ridiculous amounts of damage) and that takes it away from us.
Luckily, Eureka Crystals are farmable at this point, thanks to Bonga Bugle shop minigame) so we can have a reliable power/defence power-up before each difficult battle, and this is one such battle.
I field the same Gladiators I brought to the Flowsand Lord battle, but this time using Beatdown isn't such a good idea because it's only 40% accurate (the guy has evade of a Ninja, even though he lacks Double Sword for now).
Out of his allies, the ninja is by far the strongest, as he does have Double Sword and his 2 consecutive attacks take out our units too easily. Well, what can you expect when I'm fighting lv. 18 units with lv. 5 ones (plus, since I banned auction houses, the best equipment I have is Survival Vests right now which is pretty unimpressive).
A Viera Green Mage I deployed here can put the Ninja to sleep, and keep him asleep. Ewan will actually waste turns trying to wake him up with a Remedy, which is even better for us.
If Ewan is stupid enough to rush us on his first turn, we may beat him quickly, otherwise we may or may not get lucky.
The second mission is a little harder. We do have our clan privilege now, but the enemies are harder - the boss spams Aero, Water and Bio (he needs MP though), and there's a White Mage who can heal him in a pinch. There's also Critical:Quicken / Quicken from the Time Mage going on, so we can expect to eat two MT spells in this mission even if we try to get done as quickly as possible.
I didn't bother with Tinker's full-party Haste or Beatdown spam because the battle is already a little too luck-reliant. We need to surround the boss with Gladiators, which makes it way too easy for him, and his Berserker ally, to get heavy damage on multiple targets while escaping.
But once again, Beatdown is too risky (though the one time I took risk with Flowsand Lord Yowie, it actually saved my ass). I had to resort to it at the end, because I was losing, though.
Cid joins as we make our way to the second continent after this mission, and we can reset to get him a higher speed stat. FFTA2 has a different system for speed growths, as each class has its own chance of procing the speed by 1 upon level-up (kinda like Fire Emblem). Cid has Warrior growths, which is 50% chances to proc speed with each level-up, meaning if we have incredible patience we can probably recruit a really fast Cid. However, I stopped after I got one with 70 speed because 20 attempts in those Cids weren't getting any better. At least he's faster than Adelle at lv. 9.
Hiring Cid also boosts the clan privilege to lv. 10 assuming everybody else is fired, but I want to postpone all that firing until Hurdy joins (also at a fixed level). Then I'll hire some good generics and focus on getting better clan privileges (Move UP 2, Power 5 and others are already available around this point in the game) and loot for equipment.
Before Cid's joining, the party REALLY struggles with most of the regular missions, and have a bulky guy like him solo the maps really helps. He's pretty much the T.G. Cid of this challenge, except he gets outclassed by units like Penelo and even generics later on.
But yeah, I'm lacking a lot of good equips at this point because the optional missions are just too hard without Cid.
