In this chapter, Manny and Glottis reach the seaside town of Rubacava, hoping to get some news of Meche; as it happens, instead they get stuck in the town, with Manny working menial jobs until, one year later, he becomes the proud owner of his own Calavera Cafe, with Glottis reprofiled as a lounge piano player and the local population steadily drawn to Manny's roulette tables. Eventually, Manny's old friend Salvador informs him that his enemies have finally gotten wind of his whereabouts, urging him to leave Rubacava - and a sudden brief glimpse of Meche taken away by Domino on a steamer ship becomes yet another incentive. However, in order to leave town on the last steamer available, Manny needs to run a rather difficult set of errands...
