In this chapter, Manny completes his initial survey of the interesting places in Rubacava, including the grim abode of Coroner Membrillo and the bizarre cat race tracks, then heads back to the casino where he extorts a pass to the VIP High Rollers' Lounge from Chowchilla Charlie. His attempts to bring down the crooked lawyer Nick Virago for cheating on his lover Lola with his boss' girlfriend Olivia at first seem unsuccessful, but eventually he manages to get a promising lead by pilfering Virago's cigarette case which - as he finds out with involuntary assistance from the pretty, but light-headed security guard Carla - holds the key to the local lighthouse. Unfortunately, by the time Manny arrives there, it is already too late for poor Lola, left sprouting in the gloom - which is where we get to understand that things can be taken pretty seriously even in this goofy corner of the universe.
