How to Create Partition on Hard Drive, SSD or USB on Windows 10 or 11
Creating a partition on a hard drive, SSD, or USB drive in Windows 10 or 11 is straightforward. Here’s how you can do it:
Step 1: Open Disk Management
Access Disk Management:
Press Win + X and select Disk Management from the menu.
Alternatively, press Win + R, type diskmgmt.msc, and hit Enter.
Step 2: Select the Drive
Locate the Drive:
In the Disk Management window, identify the drive where you want to create a partition.
If it’s a new drive, it may show as Unallocated Space.
If the Drive Has Existing Partitions (Optional):
Shrink an Existing Partition (if space is already allocated):
Right-click an existing partition and select Shrink Volume.
Enter the amount of space to shrink (in MB), then click Shrink.
This will free up unallocated space for the new partition.
Step 3: Create a New Partition
Right-Click on Unallocated Space:
Select New Simple Volume from the context menu.
Follow the New Simple Volume Wizard:
Set Volume Size: Enter the size of the partition in MB (default is the maximum available).
Assign a Drive Letter: Choose a letter (e.g., D, E, F).
Format the Partition: Select the file system:
NTFS: For Windows-only devices.
FAT32: For compatibility with most devices (4GB file limit).
exFAT: For compatibility with Windows, macOS, and large files.
Volume Label: Name the partition (optional).
Complete the Wizard:
Click Finish, and the new partition will be created and formatted.
Step 4: Verify the Partition
Open File Explorer (Win + E) to confirm the new partition is visible and accessible.
