How to Stop PC overheating and Crashing on Windows 10 or 11 (CPU Temps)
Overheating and crashing on a Windows 10 or 11 PC can result from hardware issues, improper settings, or heavy workloads. Here’s how to address the issue effectively:
1. Monitor PC Temperatures
Use Monitoring Tools:
Download apps like HWMonitor, Core Temp, or MSI Afterburner to monitor CPU and GPU temperatures.
Ideal CPU temps: 30-50°C (idle) and 60-85°C (under load).
GPUs can handle higher temps, typically 60-85°C under load.
2. Clean Your PC
Dust Accumulation:
Over time, dust can block fans and airflow.
Shut down the PC, unplug it, and use compressed air to clean:
CPU fans
GPU fans
Case fans and vents
Check Thermal Paste:
If your CPU hasn’t had its thermal paste replaced in years, it may need fresh paste. Apply high-quality thermal paste for better heat dissipation.
3. Ensure Proper Airflow
Check Case Ventilation:
Make sure your PC case isn’t pushed against walls or enclosed in a tight space.
Use additional case fans if necessary for better airflow.
Reposition Your Laptop (if applicable):
Use a cooling pad to prevent heat buildup.
4. Adjust System Settings
Lower Processor Performance:
Reducing CPU usage prevents overheating:
Press Win + R, type control powercfg.cpl, and press Enter.
Click Change plan settings for the active power plan.
Go to Change advanced power settings.
Expand Processor power management → Maximum processor state.
Set it to 90% for both On battery and Plugged in.
Disable Overclocking:
If you've overclocked your CPU/GPU, revert to default clock speeds via the BIOS or software like MSI Afterburner.
