How to Fix your USB Microphone Turning OFF on your Windows 10 or 11 PC
If your USB microphone keeps turning off on your Windows 10 or 11 PC, it’s likely due to power management settings, driver issues, or conflicting software. Try these fixes:
1. Disable USB Power Management
Windows may turn off USB devices to save power.
Press Win + X and select Device Manager.
Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
Right-click USB Root Hub (or similar) and select Properties.
Go to the Power Management tab.
Uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
Click OK and repeat for all USB Root Hub entries.
2. Disable USB Selective Suspend in Power Settings
This prevents Windows from disabling your USB mic.
Press Win + R, type control, and press Enter.
Go to Hardware and Sound - Power Options.
Click Change plan settings next to your active plan.
Click Change advanced power settings.
Expand USB settings -USB selective suspend setting and set it to Disabled.
Click Apply and OK.
3. Check and Update Audio Drivers
An outdated or corrupted driver can cause disconnections.
Press Win + X, select Device Manager.
Expand Sound, video, and game controllers.
Right-click your microphone and select Update driver.
Choose Search automatically for drivers.
If the issue persists:
Right-click the microphone again, choose Uninstall device, then restart your PC to reinstall the driver.
4. Check Exclusive Mode in Sound Settings
Exclusive mode allows apps to control your mic, which may cause issues.
Right-click the Speaker icon in the taskbar and select Sounds.
Go to the Recording tab, select your mic, and click Properties.
Go to the Advanced tab.
Uncheck Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device.
Click Apply and OK.
5. Use a Different USB Port or Hub
Try plugging the microphone into a different USB port, preferably a USB 3.0 port (blue).
Avoid using a USB hub unless it’s powered.
6. Check for Conflicting Software
Some software (like voice changers, virtual audio devices, or gaming apps) may interfere with your mic.
Press Win + X, select Task Manager.
Go to the Processes tab and look for apps that might be controlling your microphone (e.g., Voicemeeter, Discord, Skype).
Right-click the app and select End Task to test if the issue is resolved.
7. Run the Windows Troubleshooter
Go to Settings - System - Sound.
Under Input, select your microphone.
Click Troubleshoot and follow the prompts.
