How to Fix USB Drive Not Showing up on Windows 10 or 11
If your USB drive is unrecognized on Windows 10 or 11, try the following steps:
1. Basic Checks
Test the USB drive in another port or device to rule out physical issues.
Restart your PC and reconnect the USB drive.
2. Update or Reinstall USB Drivers
Press Win + X and select Device Manager.
Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
Look for any devices with a yellow exclamation mark or "Unknown Device."
Update the driver:
Right-click the device → Update Driver → Search automatically for drivers.
If updating doesn’t work:
Right-click the USB device → Uninstall device.
Disconnect the USB, restart your PC, and reconnect the USB to reinstall drivers.
3. Check USB in Disk Management
Press Win + X and select Disk Management.
Look for your USB drive (it may appear as "Unallocated" or "No Media").
If it’s unallocated:
Right-click the drive → New Simple Volume → Follow the steps to format it.
If no media is detected, the drive may be damaged.
4. Change the USB Drive Letter
In Disk Management, find your USB drive.
Right-click the USB → Change Drive Letter and Paths → Add or Change.
Assign a new drive letter and click OK.
5. Disable USB Selective Suspend
Open Control Panel → Power Options.
Click Change plan settings for your current power plan.
Select Change advanced power settings.
Expand USB Settings → USB Selective Suspend Setting.
Set it to Disabled → Click Apply.
6. Run Hardware Troubleshooter
Press Win + I → Go to System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters.
Scroll down to Hardware and Devices (if available) → Run the troubleshooter.
7. Test in Safe Mode
Boot into Safe Mode (hold Shift while restarting your PC and select Safe Mode).
Check if the USB is recognized.
8. Check BIOS/UEFI Settings
Restart your PC and enter BIOS/UEFI (usually by pressing F2, Del, or Esc).
Ensure that USB ports are enabled.
9. Use Third-Party Recovery Tools (For Data)
If the drive is recognized but not accessible, use tools like:
Recuva
EaseUS Data Recovery
Disk Drill
10. Format the USB Drive (Last Resort)
⚠ ️ Warning: Formatting erases all data on the USB drive.
Open Disk Management.
Right-click the USB and select Format.
Choose NTFS or FAT32, depending on your needs.
