How to Set Phone to FILE Transfer instead of Charging Only (Best Method)
0Setting your phone to "File Transfer" mode is the most common way to enable data access from a computer. This is a crucial step because modern Android phones default to a "Charging Only" mode for security reasons when connected to an unknown device.
The best method is to use the notification that appears immediately after you connect your phone to a PC.
Method 1: The Quick Notification Method (Best & Most Common)
This method is the most direct and works on nearly all Android phones.
Unlock your phone. Connect your phone to your computer using a USB cable.
Look for the USB notification. A notification will appear in your phone's status bar and notification shade, usually saying something like "Charging this device via USB."
Tap the notification. Tap on the notification to expand it. A menu of USB options will appear.
Select "File Transfer." From the list, choose "File Transfer" (or sometimes called "MTP" for Media Transfer Protocol).
Immediately after selecting this option, a file transfer window should pop up on your computer, allowing you to browse your phone's files.
Method 2: The Developer Options Method (For Advanced Users)
This method is useful if you want to set "File Transfer" as the default USB behavior, or if the notification method is not working.
Enable Developer Options:
Go to Settings About phone.
Tap on the "Build number" seven times in quick succession. A message will appear saying "You are now a developer!"
Access USB configuration settings:
Go back to the main Settings menu.
Find and tap on "System", then "Developer options".
Set the default USB mode:
Scroll down until you find "Default USB configuration."
Tap on it and select "File Transfer" from the list.
Now, whenever you connect your phone to a computer, it will automatically default to file transfer mode.
