How to Stop your PS4 from Turning off on you Randomly (System Settings)
To prevent overheating, ensure your PS4 is in a well-ventilated area with 4-6 inches of clearance on all sides and avoid enclosed spaces. Turn off and unplug the console, then use compressed air or a soft brush to clean dust from the vents and fan. If it shuts off with a red light or overheating message, let it cool for 30 minutes before restarting.
To adjust power settings, go to Settings, select Power Save Settings, choose Set Time Until PS4 Turns Off, and set both Media Playback and General Applications to Don’t Turn Off or extend the time. In Set Features Available in Rest Mode, uncheck Supply Power to USB Ports if it’s not needed, as this can cause power glitches.
For the power supply, make sure the power cable is securely plugged into the PS4 and outlet, and try a different outlet to rule out a faulty socket. Swap the power cord with another compatible one, since the PS4 uses a standard figure-8 cable, to check if it’s defective. Plug directly into a wall outlet instead of a power strip, as some strips may not provide consistent voltage.
To check for hardware issues, back up your data by going to Settings, System, then Back Up and Restore, in case the hard drive is failing. To rebuild the database, turn off the PS4 completely, hold the power button for 7 seconds until you hear a second beep to enter Safe Mode, connect your controller via USB, and select Rebuild Database to fix corrupted data without deleting games or saves.
Listen for unusual noises like a loud fan or clicking, which could mean the fan or hard drive needs repair.
For software, go to Settings, select System Software Update, and ensure the latest firmware is installed, as bugs in older versions can cause issues. Check game updates in Notifications, then Downloads, to update any games causing problems.
During use, avoid Rest Mode if it shuts off there and power down completely instead. Give the console breaks during long sessions to cool off.
If the problem continues, note any error messages like CE-34335-8 when it shuts off and search them online for specific fixes. If nothing works, it might be a hardware failure like the power supply unit or motherboard, so contact PlayStation Support for repair options.
