How to Turn ON or OFF the GPS Location & Allow Location on Apps for Android Phone (Best Method)
Your Android phone (which runs on stock or near-stock Android) provides two different ways to manage location: one for the entire phone and one for individual apps.
Here is the best method for each task.
Part 1: How to Turn ON or OFF Global Location (GPS)
The fastest and best method for a simple ON/OFF toggle for the entire phone's GPS/Location Services is the Quick Settings Panel.
Best Method: Quick Settings Toggle
Swipe Down: Swipe down from the very top of your phone screen to pull down the notification and Quick Settings panel.
Expand the Panel (if needed): Swipe down a second time to fully expand the panel, showing all your quick settings tiles.
Find the Location Tile: Look for the tile labeled Location (it often has a pin or pointer icon).
Tap to Toggle: Tap the tile once to immediately turn your device's global location access ON or OFF.
Tip: If you don't see the Location tile, tap the Edit (pencil) icon at the bottom of the panel and drag the Location tile from the bottom section up to the active section.
Part 2: How to Allow Location on Specific Apps (Permissions)
The best method to check or change which apps can use your location is by using the Permission Manager in Settings.
Best Method: Permission Manager
Open Settings: Tap the Settings app icon (the gear icon) on your home screen or in the App Drawer.
Go to Privacy/Security: Scroll down and tap Security & privacy (or just Privacy on some models).
Open Permission Manager: Tap Privacy → Permission manager.
Select Location: Tap on the Location permission to see a list of every app that has requested location access.
Change App Access: You will see the apps grouped into categories:
Allowed all the time: Apps can use your location even when they are not running.
Allowed only while in use: Apps can only use your location when you have the app open and active on the screen.
Not allowed: Apps cannot use your location at all.
Tap an App to change its setting (e.g., tap on "Google Maps") and select one of the allowed options.
