All the evil minds have clashed together and formed an alliance to conquer the world. Defeat these evil scientists in this fun arcade-styled action game called League of Evil. As the only good agent, you have been assigned to eliminate them by infiltrating each level. Jump and climbs from platform to platform and try to locate the bad scientists. Eliminate them and the level will be completed automatically. As you progress through higher levels, the level becomes more challenging too. Avoid getting hit by the electric rods or getting shot by the turrets or else you will start all over again on that level.

Sure, we have all sorts of fantabulous 3D graphics these days, with the overall level of quality easily being at par or, as is more often the case with modern games, surpassing the FMVs of yesteryear. Gone are the days where gaming technology necessitated that all graphics be blocky pixels running about on the screen with little chiptune sounds. That said, those older games do hold a certain charm, and it can be fun to go back to them. That also said, those older games were fiendishly hard, so it can be fun to grab a hold of a game that has the best of both worlds. Enter League of Evil.

While playing a maniacally cackling villain with a goatee, top hat, and monocle is all kinds of awesome, this game actually has you fighting against the eponymous League of Evil. Sure, it might perhaps be a bit of letdown, but the game is still lots of fun nonetheless.

As aforementioned, the game is done in old school 8-bit graphics. Granted, it's not true 8-bit as the color count and effects pretty much disqualify it from being real 8-bit, but for the layman who doesn't care about all that technical mumbo jumbo, it's 8-bit enough. The main character sprite is very nicely animated, with every walk cycle, jump frame, attack animation, etc... being unique and pretty. Well, perhaps the animation where you punch the evil scientists so hard that they explode causing their heads to fly up into the air isn't exactly pretty, but it sure looks cool.

The controls are about par the course for platformers. You've got left and right on the left side of the screen, and these will (surprise, surprise!) allow you to move left and right. On the right side of the screen are the A and B buttons (in fine gaming tradition) and they allow you to attack and jump (or double jump) respectively. Of course, as simple as the basic controls are, there's more to them. You can also jump off walls, allowing you to do triangle jumps and to gain altitude. You can also do the inexplicable platformer double jump which allows you to jump at the peak of your previous jump in order to read greater heights, or to perform a second jump at the nadir of a drop so that you can escape certain death.

As with other platformers, the main goal is to get from one point on the level to another point. With this one though, the final point doesn't have you taking down a flag or anything, but instead you're tasked with punching the head off of an evil scientist. A bit gory? Well, yeah, I suppose, but there's only so much gore you can get from 8-bit games, so it's all good. Along the way in each level, you'll have to navigate standard platformer traps, dodge spikes, clear jumps, and so on and so forth. Classic platformer gameplay, right at your fingertips.

And that wraps it up for this little episode. Go on and download yourself a copy of League of Evil! It's free, it's fun, and it will bring you back to the glory days of yesteryear's gaming!
