This robot managed to slip away from a factory that recycles rejected robots. Now's your chance to help this stowaway get its freedom in his puzzle mobile game called Volt. The focus in this game is to transport this helpless robot to the exit. If you do, the next level will be unlocked. Simply disconnect the robot from the beam to make it fall. Let the laws of physics guide you as well on higher levels and avoid getting caught on the beam saw blades. You also need to use this robot's ability to release shockwaves that can help you move on other platforms.

Puzzle games are a bit of a mixed bag. Usually they're either too easy that you just fly right through them or so hard that you can't beat them without owning the official unabridged strategy guide, a subscription to a puzzle hints service, a sextant, and two laden European swallows. IT is a nice then, to come across a puzzle game that manages to be challenging while not being too infuriating. And what's more, one that does it with some real style. Let's have a look at Volt.

Sure, the name might not really give you all that much information, but then again, it does provide that hint of intrigue that piques the interest. And if it did pique your interest, then awesome, because it's a great game.

Unlike a bunch of other puzzle games, this one has some really spiffy graphics that it pulls of with great panache. It does have a rather retro feel, but it's not an 8-bit game by any standard (although truth be told, even those games who claim to be 8-bit these days really aren't when you look at it from a technical standpoint. But -anyway-...). It makes great use of the combination of old school graphics with modern embellishments and prettiness. Sure, there's not really all that much in the way of character animations, but let's face it, your character is a defective little robot who flops around, there's only so much you can do with that. But what they do manage to do with it is really great.

The music in the game is just as spiffy. It's upbeat, it's catchy, and it really sets the mood for the game. It can be slightly haunting at times (though, of course, that could just be me) and this only adds to the overall ambiance and aesthetic of the game.

In each level, you're tasked with getting the poor robot from the starting point to the exit point. Simple enough, perhaps, but your robot isn't exactly terminator level in mobility and general usefulness. Heck, it's not even at Wall-E level of mobility. All you have are your energy ray thing-a-ma-bobs. They allow you to project a ray of electricity (however that works) and use it to cling to surfaces like a particularly robotic Spiderman. Of course, you're not going to be swinging around nimbly here, instead you'll be flopping around for the most part, trying to navigate your way through levels while avoiding all the things that can turn you from a robot, to a scrap heap.

While it may not sound all that complicated, and indeed the first few levels are a cinch to get through, the levels do get more complicated as time goes on. You're free to experiment with the levels, so you don't have to worry about getting so frustrated you chuck your phone at the cat and accidentally shatter the aquarium while you're at it. It's a nice and steady progression of difficulty, giving you enough time to get used to things while providing an excellent challenge as you move through the levels.

And that's just about it for this little review. If you're in the mood to grab a spiffy little platformer/puzzler, then go on and brab yourself a copy of Volt!
