If there’s one thing I’m guilty of in any of the Baldur’s Gate or Icewind Dale games beyond hoarding consumables and only using rogues for trap detection and disarming, it’s underutilising my spellcasters. Be it clerics, sorcerers or wizards, rarely do I go beyond a small corner of their vast collection of spells and unlock their fully potential. They’re very weak at low levels but we’re far from chapter one of the first game, the dangerous time when a single gibberling can be deadly. When used correctly, high level spellcasters are exceptionally powerful, easily able to obliterate encounters single-handedly without breaking a sweat, buff up everyone’s power to vast heights and dispel the most mighty of protective abjurations with but a thought.

I may not yet be able to tap into the full might of my casters, but what I do use is still more than powerful enough to take on most of the challenges Ust Natha will be throwing at us, including the second arena in the tavern. Yes, there are two of them and they’re quite different from one another, though the ultimate objective remains the same: fight and win. The second one’s main difference is that we don’t have the option of bringing the entire party into each battle. Not all fights can be done by everyone either, allowing our long suffering arcane caster a chance to finally show just how mighty he believes he has been all along.
