Let's Play Donkey Kong Country 3 GBA - Part 1: New Style Mode
Well, it's time to start another project...and I've decided to do something a bit different for this one! A number of things kind of came together here...I'd like to do a Donkey Kong Country game approximately once every 7 LPs or 14 months, but I don't have a capture card yet, so I couldn't record any of the newer ones, and I'm not familiar enough with the Game Boy ones to feel comfortable recording them. It's been a while since I've done the SNES version of DKC3, though, and the GBA version does have some new content to enjoy. At the same time, I also wanted to try, rather than doing voice commentary, doing text commentary for a change. It could be interesting to try a new style like this, some people have said that my voice isn't the greatest to listen to, I communicate better in writing anyway, and best of all, it would mean I would have a lot more opportunities to record. This probably won't be a permanent thing unless you guys prefer this style, but I will most likely do text commentary on occasions when I do a game that I've done before but differently, such as playing as a different character, on a different difficulty setting, or a different version of the game. So let's just see how this goes, shall we? (And in case you're wondering, the text box style was in fact inspired by PinkKittyRose's.) Huge thanks to a great friend of mine, whom we'll call Kelly Scribes, for drawing the avatars!
Now, the game itself is mostly the same as the SNES original, but there are a few changes. Obviously, the screen isn't quite as tall, so some levels might have had subtle changes to account for that (it's hard to tell), and having 2 fewer buttons means that L and R are actually used for things now. The graphics are also brighter to work better with the original GBA's dark screen, the music has been completely redone, and there have been some other aesthetic changes, such as the world map being designed on a larger scale and text boxes looking different. I'll discuss the exact differences as they come. The most important thing is that the GBA version of this game actually has an entire extra world, with new levels and everything. The rest of the game plays pretty much identically to the SNES version for the most part, though.
In any case, we start things off by visiting Bazaar at his general store, Wrinkly Kong at her retreat, and Funky Kong at his rental shop. From there, we go to Lake Orangatanga. Lakeside Limbo 1-1 or the first level of the game, introduces us to the pier/lakeside/whatever you'd call that theme, as well as some basic enemies and the first animal buddy. It also has some pretty good music; I like the redone version of Stilt Village at least as much as the original. 1-2, Doorstop Dash, has a mill theme, rather odd but decent enough music, and a gimmick where you must pull levers to open doors and go through them before them close. 1-3, Tidal Trouble, is a longer and somewhat more difficult lakeside level, it introduces Enguarde the swordfish, the water in this one pushes you backward, and it's one of the few places where you actually need Kiddy Kong's water-skipping roll jump to reach a bonus. And in between those last two levels, we actually visit a new Brother Bear, who has displaced his brother Barnacle to the extra world.
With that, we've started up a new project, and a bit of a novel one at this point in time, I suppose. Oh, and in case you would like to see more lovely art from my avatar creator, you can find more of her work at http://kelly-writerssoul.deviantart.com/.
Oh, yeah, and if you're curious what my LP of the original SNES version of Donkey Kong Country 3 (with voice commentary) was like (besides being before I was all that good at these...), it can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL3469F9577B055FF9
