Let's Play Mega Man X3 - Part 14: Big Bad Sigma
It is time...time for the final stage of the game, to finish off the fortress with Doppler Stage 4 (or should it be called Sigma Stage 4 now?). There isn't much to the stage itself, just a single hallway of enemies, a vertical climb, and the boss. Sigma's third incarnation is, as one might expect, a pain in the butt to fight. He has two forms, and his first form is relatively predictable but kind of hard to dodge. He has a shield that he can throw when low on health, and he shoots fireballs. The fireballs always come out in the same patterns (not unlike Neon Tiger's sparkly projectiles), but he shoots them so fast and close together that I've never had much luck dodging them...or maybe I'm just too willing to tank the hits. Hey, I'm not doing a Perfect Run here. He is weak to the Spinning Blade (and it actually does a pretty good chunk of damage to him when fully charged), but really, the best thing I've found to use against him is four full Sub-Tanks. And if anything, his second form is even more annoying...his huge battle body is slow and its attacks aren't *particularly* hard to dodge...if you're focusing only on dodging them. The problem is, he also has a ridiculously small hitbox, and the places you have to be to hit it also tend to be pretty bad for dodging all the crap he shoots at you. (If you were saving the Hyper Cannon ammo for an emergency, now might be a good time to use it.) And you're not even done after finishing him off...you then have to outrun some lava while Sigma's floating head gets in your way. And before you ask, YES. I have indeed had X die during that part—AFTER beating the final boss—at least once, and needless to say, rage resulted. After that comes a cutscene, then some more cutscenes followed by the credits sequence.
With that, we are...ALMOST done with another LP. I actually have a few more things to show off, but those will go in an extra video. In the meantime, I'll just say that I quite like Mega Man X3. It's not my favorite game in the series (though it is my brother's favorite), but it's certainly not my least favorite either. It pretty much has everything that the first two games did, along with some unique twists of its own. Some of my thoughts about it:
- The Ride Armor system is easily the best in the series
- The armor part system was rather interesting (with the double upgrades; no other MMX game did that!)
- The music mostly sounded too similar, though Blizzard Buffalo's stage music and the Doppler Stage 1/2 theme, among others, are pretty good
- The stages actually kind of feel rather similar as well
- The special weapons were okay, but nothing special (except maybe the Spinning Blade and Triad Thunder)
- The final boss was really freaking annoying to fight
- It's kind of interesting how this is the only Mega Man X game without a fire-themed Maverick
- If you ever want to get the original SNES cartridge, be warned that it is NOT cheap; mine set me back nearly $80
So, with that, stay tuned for the extras!
