Let's Play Mega Man X4 - Part 4: Adventures in Cyberspace
The third boss in my lineup is Cyber Peacock. Once again, his stage has some useful items that don't require special weapons, so he's another good pick for early in the game. His stage is a pretty interesting one, too. The first half of it is basically a series of three progressively more difficult obstacle courses full of yellow orbs that can damage you and hold you, and if you get to the end of each quickly enough, you get an item. All three of this stage's items are given as rewards for the obstacle courses, the heart tank for the first, the Sub-Tank for the second, and the Dr. Light capsule for the third...which is the head part, and it allows you to use your special weapons in their uncharged form an infinite number of times! It is definitely one of the most useful head parts in the series. It's also worth noting that Split Mushroom's weapon can outright destroy the yellow orbs, if you care to use it (and, of course, have it handy). The second part of the stage has no items and no time limits; in it, there are buttons that flip the stage upside-down, which changes the direction of certain sloped platforms, allowing certain balls to roll down them and destroy pink barriers. This part is REALLY simple and quick to get through, considering all you really have to do is hit each button that you come across and avoid the enemies and rolling balls. If only the boss were so easy...Cyber Peacock can be a problem if you don't know how to deal with him. He doesn't seem to separate his fight into two parts, but throughout it, he will disappear, reappear (on top of the player if you don't move out of the way), and perform one of his three moves: sticking out his tail feathers in a burst of energy, flying upward before disappearing, or going to one side of the screen and shooting feathers at you. It's this last one that's troublesome to deal with; his feather projectiles home in on the player, move quite fast, and explode if they hit you. He can only shoot one at a time, but he can keep up that attack for quite a while. You can get into a loop and dodge each feather the same way, but if you lose the pattern, prepare for some serious pain. His weapon, the Aiming Laser...well, really, it's one of those weapons that has to be seen in action. Describing it doesn't really do it justive. Suffice it to say that it's a laser beam that can be aimed and doesn't at all resemble any attacks that Cyber Peacock actually used. Overall, I like Cyber Peacock's stage. I'll admit getting the items in the first part can sometimes be a bit annoying, but it's still a pretty interesting one, with its theme and design. I wonder if this was a predecessor of, and served as inspiration for, Optic Sunflower's stage in Mega Man X8?
