Let's Play Mega Man X4 - Part 9: Biological Spore Fare
We're at the final Maverick now, Split Mushroom. (And to think that he would have been the second one if I had gone by weakness order...) His stage is probably the longest of the eight, as well as one of the harder ones and light on the items. Each of the two parts actually has three sections to it. The first of these is a spiral staircase with a pseudo-3D effect, which you must climb to reach the teleporter to the next area. The second section is pretty much a basic horizontal hallway area with some pits to jump over. The third is mostly vertical, with robotic spiked flowers, flying red robots, and other enemies. After this is the midboss, which is a spiked...thing that routinely rockets upward and destroys the platform it hits. The best way to deal with it is to lure it to one side, then jump down when it starts going up and get as many hits on it as you can before it goes back down, then repeat. Area 2 of this stage starts off with the fourth section, another staircase but with more and harder enemies. The fifth section is also like the second, except that sections of the terrain fall slowly down as you progress. The sixth section is an elevator ride with more spiked flower things, and it leads up to Split Mushroom. Split Mushroom is an interesting one...he was the first Mega Man X boss to use a cloning move, and he's quick but rather fun to fight if you know what you're doing. He starts off just hanging on the wall dropping holograms onto the ground, then he jumps up and spins around while the holograms rush at you, and then he duplicates himself and the fight really picks up. Both duplicates can run at you, jump, spin, and fall from the air. Upon defeat, Split Mushroom yields the Soul Body, which lets X shoot out a hologram of himself that damages enemies. When charged...well, you'll have to see it. The point is, we now have all the weapons and items (though for some reason, only 7 of my heart tanks are showing up...and I even went back and checked to see if I'd inadvertently missed any). I'd say we're ready to take on some fortress stages, wouldn't you?
