Moving on to the second half of Kongo Jungle, we come across the first underwater level, Coral Capers (1-4). Its music is called Aquatic Ambiance, and it's probably one of the best underwater themes in a game. Overall, Donkey Kong Country games have pretty good underwater levels compared to most. Each game seems to have its own variety of enemies in underwater levels, too... This one is pretty simple, introducing the mechanics of water levels, and Enguarde is here as well. The swordfish, just like in the later games, can defeat underwater enemies by plowing into them with his sharp snout. Water levels in DKC1 also do not have bonuses. The next level, 1-5, the final one in this world, is Barrel Cannon Canyon, which lives up to its name: it is full of barrels that shoot the Kongs every which way, sometimes automatically. We also have a few NPCs to visit around here, Funky before and Candy after. Funky's Flights works the same way in this game as it did in the second, except that it's free. You can use Funky's barrel plane to travel to any world on the map that you have already been to. Candy's Save Point is exactly what you'd expect: Candy Kong, who is noticeably absent from future DKC games, lets you save your game. (It's worth mentioning that the save points in this game come a good deal later in the worlds than in Donkey Kong Country 2 or 3, and unlike in 3, you can't exit the world the way you came.) After this is the first boss stage of the game, Very Gnawty's Lair. Santa better get out the coal, because someone has been Very Gnawty this year. He's a giant hopping green beaver that takes 5 hits to destroy, hops higher and farther after each hit, and is quite an easy enemy to defeat. After defeating him, a giant banana falls from the sky and the Kongs gain access to the next world of the game.
