Let's Play New Super Mario Bros. - Part 19: Long and Twisty Paths
Only three levels this time, and yet this one took a decent length of time anyway because one of them is auto-scrolling, one is a maze, and one is...well, we'll discuss that in a minute. We start things off with the last normal level, 7-7, which auto-scrolls in all sorts of different directions. Despite that, though, this one is actually pretty straightforward and linear; there is absolutely nothing hidden in this one. 7-A is up next, and it is rather interesting. Both the foreground and the top background layer are unique to this level, that being basically a classic screen-scrolling pipe maze, similar to the ones found in Super Mario Bros. 3 (especially World 7). The level isn't that tough or that long, though; about the only possibly tricky part is being aware of how the Piranha Plants behave (there is one in particular that can be quite a nuisance). And then we have the World 7 castle...ugh. Definitely not one of my favorite levels, this one. It marks the return of the "block snake" that first showed up in Roy's Castle in Super Mario World, though it's green this time and uses a different sound effect. And you know, block snakes are almost always tedious affairs. I think they actually were done a bit better in NSMB2 (by making them go back and forth in a small area instead of taking a long path through the stage) and NSMBU (by giving them more unique and interesting gimmicks) but in this game and the Wii one (and arguably SMW itself), they're just...not fun. The boss is a bit better, though still fairly easy. Lakithunder is about what you'd expect, given his name: a Lakitu that can shoot lightning at you. He also throws bouncing Spinies, which are actually the more dangerous of his attacks (the lightning is pretty easy to dodge), and he tries to dive-bomb you, which offers you a chance to bop him. Defeat him, and you (re)gain access to World 8.
World 8...that means we have only one world left...
