Let's Play Super Mario RPG - Part 39: They Call Him Mr. Smithy
We're at the end now...it's time to challenge Smithy, the...um, robotic blacksmith creature who has been causing all the trouble. He's the final boss, and he takes long enough to defeat that he gets his own video. There are two parts to the battle with Smithy. The first one has him performing some basic magical and physical attacks, plus he has assistance from the "Smelter", which spits out globs of molten metal that he can form into mechanical Shysters to attack you. You can take out the Smelter so he can't make any more Shysters, but I'm not sure it's worth it, because Smithy has 2000 HP, but the Smelter has 1500 HP and, it seems, higher defense than Smithy. After you defeat this form, he blows his top, causes the floor to collapse, and changes into his second form. This second form has 8000 HP, and it can switch between four different heads (after the first round, when it uses a generic one). He has a tank-shaped head, which specializes in strong physical attacks; a wizard-shaped head, which has powerful magical attacks; a treasure-chest-shaped head, which inflicts status effects on the entire party; and an armored head, which cannot attack (as far as I know) but has very high defense. His body can also attack you separately by shooting a flurry of bullets. He seems to use the tank and wizard head far more often than the other two, though (I never even got a chance to attack the armored one the entire fight). Despite him having 8000 HP, more than any other single enemy, this battle goes a lot faster than you'd expect it to, mainly because the wizard head has very low physical defense, so if he uses that one frequently (and he quite often does), you can deal over 300 damage in one hit. I rarely bother using magic attacks against him; each head except the wizard one has a weakness to a particular element, but I don't care to take advantage of the weaknesses, partly because it feels unsporting and partly because it tends to eat up MP quickly, and I could be using that MP for healing or reviving.
Once you defeat Smithy, you get some nicely-done cutscenes of Exor crumbling away, sunshine returning to the sky, and Geno returning to his duties as a Star Spirit. Ah, now all is happy again...but there is still the credits sequence to view....
