Rare is it that you have a game set in a peaceful land where nothing terrible is going for, for said calamity is the impetus for adventure and daring-do. For the people of Trip World, the disaster of the moment is the theft of the legendary Maita Flower, a plant imbued with powerful magic that ensures peace and tranquillity throughout the entire world. Arguments amongst the people of the world have begun to fester and it’s only a matter of time before things get even worse, but who can retrieve the flower? Certainly not its guardian who was injured in his efforts to defend it. The only one brave enough to try is the guardian’s grandson Yakopoo, so off he goes on an epic quest to save the world and be adorable while doing so.

Trip World is a game I played only briefly in my youth. It’s a platformer which was a prevalent genre on the Game Boy, but it’s one that does things very differently to its fellows. The big difference is that most of the creatures you encounter in the levels aren’t enemies; they’ll only fight you if you start on them, creating an interesting dynamic where you have to try and determine if what you see before you is a foe or not. There’s also a shape shifting mechanic that adds an element of strategy to navigating the levels. The music is fantastic – not at all a surprise for a Sunsoft game – and the game looks very pretty, full of personality and life that makes it so wonderfully endearing. It’s a very short outing but that’s balanced by having no continues or ways to gain extra lives (at least that I know of). It sets out what it wants to do and does that brilliantly and I’m sure I don’t need to mention how adorably awesome our hero is in it.

With this being a very short, we’re moving straight on to something different. As to what it is, I’ll tell you that while we’re sticking with the game general genre as Trip World, the tonal shift between the two is a sharp one indeed. Even if you haven’t played the game itself, I’m pretty confident that you know the franchise it’s from, for it is an ancient one indeed.
