Those who haven't seen much of this game before will have looked at Drake's health bar at the bottom of the mystic mirror and noticed that there's three empty spaces. These aren't there for aesthetic purposes; we'll be meeting people on our journey through the ruins of Stonekeep and beyond that'll join Drake for one reason or another. Some will seek to aid him on his quest, others may merely want to return home. Whatever their reasons for joining him, we certainly appreciate another person fighting the battles that we'll be facing. In time, Drake alone simply won't be enough to handle enemies we encounter, so it's a good idea to recruit everyone you can into your party.

Through some companions are optional, the first one you meet is not. We could explore into the sewers below and even clear them, but without the companion we'll find on this floor we can't move on to the next major area of the game. Fortunately, it's really easy to recruit him. Unfortunately, I'd forgotten the way to do so that I so easily figured out the first time I let's played this game. Now that I remember however, we'll go meet our first companion now. It'll certainly make clearing the rest of this level much easier.

Companions have predetermined levels of skill with various weapons and they cannot learn to use more. Some cannot use particular kinds of armour and a few we'll meet much later one can barely be equipped with anything you find. You only ever control Drake meaning that your companions act on their own AI, using their own consumables and attacking the targets they can reach. If they die the game doesn't end, so you can bring them back from the brink if you have the power to do so. We don't have that power yet but in time, we will.
