We've nearly cleared this floor, but nearly isn't everywhere so we'll continue exploring. There are still a few goodies left to be found before we descend into the sewers. One of which will serve us well for a significant portion of the game, opening up a whole new way to fight. While we've encountered weapons for each proficiency listed in our journal, we've yet to come across a way to use magic. By the time we've left this floor, that will change.

While we'll meet other denziens of the places beyond Stonekeep that can use magic innately, most rely on runestaffs infused with mana and inscribed with runes to cast spells. This means that you need a runestaff with sufficient mana and the rune that creates the desired effect etched into one of the slots on the staff that can take a rune. You also need a way to replenish the mana in your runestaffs, which is done by stepping into mana circles you encounter on your travels. Then it's simply a matter of willing the magic within the runestaff to do as you wish, be if throwing fireballs at foes, healing wounds or channeling the almighty power of ducks.

Yes, you read that right. Ducks.

The game provides you with a the bare basics of magic at the beginning, enough to get you started in your skill advancement. This means that until this point, you have to have fought your way to the place to start mastering magic through more martial methods, be it ranged combat or close quarters fighting. It's not possible to start this game and immediately pursue magic, though the game gives you more then enough opportunities to catch up with that skill.
