Let's Replay X-COM UFO Defence #35: Supply and Demand
Supply ships are deceptive in their difficult for a number of reasons. The lure of elerium may tempt you to take on a landed one and you might dismiss the crew on board as trifling, but that’s a dangerous mistake to make. The layout of the vessels is such that you can’t start at the bottom and clear each floor as you go, not without backtracking or destroying some interior walls. The second floor has lots of small areas to hide and the third floor has narrow corridors, blind turns and doors which may all hide aliens. Sectoid piloted vessels are more dangerous than other crews due to the leaders having psionic powers, causing havoc among your soldiers as you try to get past all the other aliens to where they are.
There’s an argument to be made for rushing the third floor to deal with a psionic capable leader but that has its own risks. Supply vessels can have a lot of crew and if the ship is landed, all of them will be alive. Many will be outside the UFO and won’t hesitate to gun down your advancing soldiers and I haven’t even mentioned the lifts yet, the prime place for an alien ambush. Until we get the ability to blast open the outer walls and for our soldiers to fly, we’ll have enter the UFO the old fashioned way which is exactly what the aliens want. This’ll change in time but not yet, so once more we need to be cautious. If that’ll be enough is something we’ll find out soon enough.
