Measuring & Comparing The Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons & Switch 2 Joy-Con 2s!
Whether you play the original Switch, Switch OLED, or Switch 2, you will surely have used the Joy-Con controller at some point. Whether you're talking about using the Joy-Con grips in handheld mode, they're fairly ubiquitous. With the launch of the Switch 2, Nintendo updated the Joy-Cons with the all-new Joy-Con 2. Let's take a look at some of the differences and similarities.
Overall Size and Design
Right off the bat, you'll notice the Switch 2 Joy-Cons are a larger overall controller. A key design difference is how they attach: the original Joy-Cons slide onto rails, whereas the Switch 2 Joy-Cons use magnetic rails, making attachment and detachment much simpler. The Switch 2 Joy-Con grip also features a flat spot where the original was completely rounded, offering a different ergonomic feel.
Button and Thumbstick Dimensions
Let's break down the sizes of the buttons and thumbsticks:
Plus Button: The Switch 2's Plus button measures 5.5 mm, compared to 5 mm on the original.
A/B/X/Y Buttons (Right Joy-Con): The main face buttons on the original Switch are 7 mm, while the Switch 2's are 8 mm.
Thumbsticks: The Switch 2's thumbsticks are significantly larger at 17.2-17.3 mm, compared to 14.7 mm on the original.
Minus Button (Left Joy-Con): The Minus button on the original is 5.2 mm, and on the Switch 2, it's 5.5 mm.
D-Pad/Directional Buttons (Left Joy-Con): These are 8.2 mm on the Switch 2, an increase from 7.1 mm on the original, making them 1.1 mm larger.
Additional Features and Ergonomics
Overall Length: The original Joy-Con measures 101 mm in length, while the Switch 2 Joy-Con is 115 mm, making it noticeably longer.
C Button: The right Switch 2 Joy-Con includes a C button, which is absent from the original.
SL/SR Buttons: You'll immediately see that the SL and SR shoulder buttons are significantly larger on the Switch 2 Joy-Cons.
Optical Sensor: The Switch 2 Joy-Cons feature an optical sensor for "mouse mode," a new functionality.
Ejection Mechanism: To release the original Joy-Cons, you press a button. The Switch 2 Joy-Cons feature a release lever for ejection, which is a different approach.
Grip Width: The original Joy-Con grip measures 143 mm in width.
Final Thoughts
The Switch 2 Joy-Cons represent a clear evolution in design and functionality, with larger buttons, an improved thumbstick, and new features like the C button and optical sensor.
What are your thoughts on the new Joy-Cons? Do you prefer the design or features of one over the other? Have you had a chance to try both?
