Go to higher floors in Wily's castle and for some reason the lights get darker. Seems legit.

The obstacles start being a bit more dangerous (or least start to behave like obstacles), but there's still way too much in the way of powerups for anything to really be life-threatening. Unless you land on spikes. Nothing can help against that sort of thing.

As for the boss, it can be an annoyance to put up with this Holograph Mega Man stuff. the Copy Robot itself *always* appears on the top floor during their first appearance. Getting the hell up there and lobbing Search Snakes ASAP turns this into the shortest boss fight in the game -- not doing so can in turn reverse fortune and make it one of the longest.
