Mega Man 3 (NES) Playthrough - Part 09: Spark Man Redux (Doc Robot: Metal Man/Quick Man)
And with all the Robot Masters defeated and their weapon powers acquired, it's time to invade Wily's third giant Skull Fortre-... ah, right. There's something else that crops up first in this game.
Yep, it's time to replay four of the eight levels after some minor redecorations and obstacle shuffles take place and a mysterious entity appears in the mugshot panels. What on Earth for? What could possibly be waiting beyond the boss gates now? Erm, surprise...
I HOPE YOU LIKE MM2 BOSSES.
BECAUSE YOU'RE GETTING MM2 BOSSES.
Well, almost. Meet Doc Robot, a machine able to imitate the programming of various Robot Masters and an excuse to add/recycle some stuff from earlier on in order to add that extra bit more play time to the game. However, Doc Robot only uses the weapon of whichever Robot Master is being imitated, retaining his own form (and with it his own giant hitbox) during combat. This is both good and bad, because while hitting him is easier (in theory), avoiding him when he's leaping and running around the place can be a complete bastard. Imitating two of the previous line of Robot Masters per stage, Doc Robot fights are essentially the game's way of saying "you'd better know how to use those special weapons, and if not then why not?".
The Metal Man incarnation seen first is a piece of piss to destroy; Magnet Missile makes short work of the encounter, although Hard Knuckle is also a viable option. Certainly easier than the first encounter against Metal Man in the previous game, but not quite so laughable as watching Metal Blade display just how broken it really is in the refight.
The Quick Man incarnation, though... agh. Take the fastest, most erratic and generally unpredictable-in-movement Robot Master from the series, give him a big hitbox, then make him most vulnerable to two of the shittiest possible offensive weapons in the game for this scenario. Gemini Laser and Search Snake are his weakness, they're practically unreliable for such a fight, and he fucking knows it. There's no Time Stopper here doing half the work, just a crap choice between a slow moving beam and ground-hugging mechanical serpents.
