Mega Man 3 (NES) Playthrough - Part 08: Hard Man
He's not hard. He's not difficult either HAHA DICK JOKES. And with that predictable piece of childishness out of the way...
This is one of those levels which isn't particularly tricky; it does feature the Have "Su" Bee/Chibee enemies (which are generally more irritating than outright dangerous), but if you're in the mood to start farming then they can be reasonably useful (although nowhere near as exploitable/profitable as MM2's Pipi swarms).
Because the level's so unthreatening, I take the opportunity to show off the oddity of Top Spin; it makes short and easy work of the Returning Monking tribe (any standard enemy which is vulnerable to Top Spin is vaporised on contact), but then the weird behaviour exhibits itself when used on the Pickelman Bull. Anything that isn't destroyed on contact is immune, and when something is immune to Top Spin then it just drains the weapon energy. Stuff like this is why Top Spin is so low on anyone's list of "useful weapons" -- if it fails to do damage, then you just take damage instead (and often lose all the weapon energy in the process).
Of all things to do the most damage, here it's Break Man. His pattern doesn't change -- he still rushes from side-to-side firing shots blindly -- but the terrain makes things a bit less simple and I can't be bothered to go out of my way avoiding him properly. He still folds soon enough.
Then Hard Man shows up, and... well, he tries. There's really not much to say about this boss, other than his power seems to be hitting the ground with such force that time and space is momentarily stalled. Unfortunately he doesn't give up this power once enough Magnet Missiles are jammed up his exhaust, instead relinquishing Hard Knuckle.
Oh great, Erection Man dishes out secret Fisting Techniques.
In all seriousness, Hard Knuckle is... okay. It accelerates across the screen rather than having a constant velocity, and can be steered up or down while in flight which gives it slightly more use than a conventional point-and-shoot weapon on occasion, but it's best used against those breakable walls. Which breakable walls? Oh they haven't shown up yet. How nice.
