Metroid: Other M - Credits (Part 26)
Samus's Log: "The man behind it all...the one who made Adam so horrible to me, the one who robbed me of all agency...my next bounty. Sakamoto, I am coming for you."
Credit time! As much as I dislike a LOT of this game, I gotta acknowledge that a lot of people worked really hard on it. It's just a shame that Sakamoto had to be an evil overlord and stick his nose where it didn't belong.
The decision to use the Wii Remote by itself? His decision. The writer of the terrible story? Him. And yet Team Ninja gets an unfair shake. I'm of the opinion that they did the best they could with what they had to work with.
Going through this game for the THIRD time now...there's a LOT of bad here, that I've throughly detailed when it came up, but it's important to note that there IS some good stuff here.
The game looks good! And those FMVs?! Makes we wish we had a game that looked that good all the time! Alongside that, there's a certain flourish that likely came from Team Ninja. The Lethal Strikes are all cool looking, as are wall jumps...generally speaking the camera work is stylish enough.
Considering the control scheme we got...it is functional, I guess? They did the best with what they could. And there are some fun little scuffles in here. When you get in the groove and dodge before quickly firing off a shot, it feels nice! But....well, it's far from perfect. Honestly...if they could have just let you use the Nunchuck and go to first person at a button press it would have solved SO many issues.
There ARE some decent story bits. The Deleter subplot had potential...too bad they just...forgot about it at the end there. Madeline and Melissa's story...could have been expanded on a bit more, but what we get was...OK, I guess? But almost everything with Adam was garbage.
Maybe if they wanted a game that fleshed out Samus's character, they should have placed it earlier in the timeline. Back when she was with the Galactic Federation? So maybe the authorization mechanic would make more sense, as would her loyalty to Adam. And you could have it be the first time she met Ridley and flesh THAT out...but that might contradict Zero Mission a bit, wouldn't it? OH WELL.
The worst part about Other M isn't the game itself....its the stain it's left on the Metroid franchise. Is it entirely deserved? No. This isn't an unplayable mess like Sonic '06, and for as bad as the story is, it's at least comprehensible and in some respects it's fun to make fun of! But it is undoubtedly the weakest Metroid main game, and it's pissed the fanbase off to the point that Federation Force basically crashed and burned before it even came out.
Speaking of, I've not played Federation Force yet at the time of writing, but I don't hear bad things about it. I just...don't hear anything about it. A victim of poor timing, I suppose. At any rate, Metroid WILL return to form someday, I'm sure. Until then, this is what we're left with...
Well...we still have a BIT more game here. Join me for one final part, where we answer some questions and visit the Bottle Ship one last time.
