Metroid: Other M - Do the Wave (Part 16)
Samus's Log: In the times when I am without the various functions of my Power Suit, I have been frustrated when tackling obstacles. Many times I have had to take a longer path around an obstruction that I could easily remedy if I had the proper ability. But now I am at full power, with all of my powers at my disposal...why did I wait to use the Wave Beam? It was clear I needed it to restore power to the platforms ahead....Adam...w-why did you make me waste time? I-I'm sure you have a good reason..."
It occurs to me going over the footage that much of this video takes place in the same two rooms. I did get a tad turned around at first, but part of this comes from this game's idea of forced backtracking.
Most Metroid games have you traverse through sections several times over, usually a new power opening up a path you couldn't go through before, but in this game Samus has every power she will need right from the get-go. Why did I have to go through that (admittedly fun!) Morph Ball section TWICE in quick succession? Wouldn't it be more efficient from a game design point of view to have me do that section once, rather than backtrack IMMEDIATELY? I could have walked into that room, been closed off and THEN gotten the Wave Beam, walked forward and realize I couldn't climb those platforms, then go down that left path and do that section ONCE. Instead I hit a dead end that didn't need to be there.
So yeah, we have the Wave Beam now. It MIGHT do more damage? At the very least, we can shoot through walls. After a...somewhat frustrating set of jumps up those platforms (how the hell are Bottle Ship personnel supposed to traverse that?!) we come to an elevator....you know what that means!
No action game is complete without a small elevator sequence and I admit, I had fun here. These Super Zebesians are quite a bit tougher than their base forms, shrugging off Overblast attempts unless weakened first. After we take them out...I SWEAR I went into first person manually. It just happened to be perfectly timed with a new arrival. I will say that this game can fluidly switch between gameplay and cinematic sequences when it wants to.
Meet the Rhedogian! This thing is classified as a mini-boss (no boss health bar) but as far as I'm concerned, this is the Boss of the Mini-bosses! Long limbs, homing missiles...giant laser beams! This thing has it all! And to fight it in close quarters isn't fun! We'll have to freeze part of it to force it to activate a....red....absorption thing. At that point, fire a Missile at 'em, then move in for a Lethal Strike. This thing leaves as quickly as it came! And this isn't the last of it....not by a long shot...
