Metroid Prime - Episode 16: Playing with Fire
In today's episode of the "Metroid Prime" playthrough, we collect all of the remaining items in Magmoor Caverns, including the final beam: the Plasma Beam.
Contrary to the Chozo Ruins, which has the most collectables in the game, Magmoor Caverns- despite its epic music, has the least. As such, there isn't much left for us to collect- just a missile expansion, a Power Bomb expansion, a Chozo Artifact, and the final beam in the game: the Plasma Beam.
When it comes to the beams in this game, they were saving the best for last because the Plasma Beam is an absolute beast in combat since it can make short work of most of the enemies in the game. Heck, there are even some enemies, such as those flying Space Pirates, that it just disintegrates with a single charge shot; and unlike the Wave and Ice Beams, which have a noticeably slower rate of fire than the Power Beam, the Plasma beam's is almost on par with it. So if you find yourself up against a group of enemies that don't resist the Plasma Beam, you can't go wrong with it.
Though speaking of beam upgrades, we also get our hands on the Ice Beam's version of Super Missiles: the Ice Spreader, which is arguably one of the best super missile upgrades in the game, only being beaten out by standard super missiles. You see, unlike the super missile upgrades associated with the Wave and Plasma Beam, which fire out a continuous attack that consumes a lot of missiles, the Ice Spreader fires out a single powerful blast for just ten missiles.
