Metroid Prime - Finale: The Face of Phazon
In today's episode of the "Metroid Prime" playthrough, we fight Meta Ridley at the Artifact Temple before confronting the final boss and the source of phazon on Tallon IV: Metroid Prime.
With all of the Chozo Artifacts in Hand, we're able to access the crater where all of the phazon on Tallon IV originated from, but before we can do so, we finally have our long-awaited fight with Meta Ridley.
While you don't see hide nor hair of Ridley for most of the game, despite him being the reason why Samus started exploring Tallon IV to begin with, he more than makes up for it with an epic boss fight that does everything right- great setup, great music, and a solid array of attacks.
During the first phase of the fight, Ridley will keep to the air and fly around the arena while attacking you with a sweeping beam attack, missiles, shockwaves, and bombs that he'll drop from above as he swoops over your head. In this phase of the fight, just keep on the offensive and blast Ridley in the chest whenever you get the chance in order to damage him.
Though once Ridley's health is almost depleted, his wings burn away and he takes to the ground, which in turn makes the fight much harder since he'll be guarding his weakpoint. As such, in order to damage Ridley in this phase, you'll need to blast him in the face enough times when his mouth is open until he reels back and reveals his chest. From my experience, super missiles are your best choice of weapon in this part of the battle since it only takes one to cause Ridley to reel back, though I've also heard that the Ice Beam is pretty effective as well. One thing to note is that during this phase, Ridley will primarily use dash attacks and tail swipes.
So with Ridley defeated, we finally enter the Impact Crater, which contains a strain of orange phazon that has (at the time of writing this) not appeared in any other "Metroid" game and can damage even though we have the Phazon Suit. In addition, fission metroids will constantly attack us as we make our way to the deepest part of the crater and encounter the source of all phazon on this planet and the final boss of this game: Metroid Prime.
While the fight against Metroid Prime isn't as epic as the one we just had with Ridley, it's still a solid battle. Like with the beam pirates and the fission metroids, the main gimmick with Metroid Prime is that throughout the fight, its color will change, indicating what kind of energy attack it'll use against you and what beam it's weak to. As such, just change your beam to match what color Metroid Prime is as you unleash everything you can on its face. Throughout the fight, Metroid Prime will move the battle to different arenas, with the second introducing its charge attack, which can only be avoided by using the Morph Ball to roll into a rut. However, as Metroid Prime's health gets lower, the time you have to prep for the charge becomes shorter and shorter until it's practically nonexistent. Thankfully, this attack doesn't deal too much damage.
For the final phase, Metroid Prime can only attack by unleashing shockwaves and summoning in the various types of metroids that we've seen over the course of the game. However, while Metroid Prime's attacks are more basic, it will constantly become invisible to your current visor, prompting you to constantly switch between all three visors as you wait for it to spawn a pool of phazon that you can use to hurt it.
In regards to my next playthrough, the first episode of which will be uploaded tomorrow, 9/1/23.
