Metroid Prime - Episode 12: Gravity of the Situation
In today's episode of the "Metroid Prime" playthrough, we explore a new area of Phendrana Drifts, get the Gravity Suit, and use it to make our way through the Orpheon's crash site in order to reach a new section of Tallon Overworld South.
Thanks to our new Ice Beam, we're now able to access the final section of Phendrana Drifts: Phendrana's Edge, which I've always found to be one of the stranger areas in the game on the grounds that it feels huge despite it only having a few rooms that you can easily travel between. I guess it's because Phendrana's Edge focuses on verticality. Nevertheless, after reaching the deepest section, we obtain the Gravity Suit, which is an upgrade that will always stand out to me in this game.
Sure, like in every other "Metroid" game, the main purpose of the Gravity Suit is to let you move unimpeded in water, which isn't really a problem that you'll encounter in this game if you have a good idea where you're going. However, for a lot of people, myself included, when they get the Ice Beam, one of the first things that they'll want to do is check out the Orpheon's crash site in the Tallon Overworld, which as you can guess, is mostly underwater. So if you're stubborn like I was, despite Samus moving at the speed of chilled molasses and jumping like a stone on Valium, you press on with your exploration, only to hit a dead-end due to your ability to jump up to the only path leading forward. Sure, there's an energy tank there, so it's not like you're leaving emptyhanded, but it still stings that you go through all of the effort of getting there, just to have to turn around and do it all again to get out of the wreck.
But fortunately for us, since we found the Gravity Suite before entering the wreck, we're able to explore it without issue while enjoying the calming music as we make our way to the lower portion of Tallon Overworld South.
