Metroid Prime - Episode 13: Mines of Phazon
In today's episode of the "Metroid Prime" playthrough, we explore the Phazon Mines, the final main location in the game, and obtain Power Bombs.
From the new section of Tallon Overworld South that we reached at the end of the last episode, we're able to access the elevator to the game's final main area: the Phazon Mines, the Space Pirates' main base on the planet, So as you can probably guess, the Space Pirates went all-out on the defenses- upgraded ceiling turrets, troops that can only be damaged with specific beams depending on their color, and monstrous elite pirates that have been genetically modified with phazon.
Though while I find the Phazon Mines to be my least favorite location in the game due to it more or less being a larger version of the Phendrana Drifts base, I'm not afraid to admit that the atmosphere was handled very well. For the entire game, you're exploring bright, colorful areas with so much life to them, from the lush, verdant Tallon Overworld to the frozen, tranquil Phendrana Drifts. But the second you enter the Phazon Mines, you quickly realize that this place is very different, and not in a good way as the only music you get is a faint mechanical clanging. That's right; instead of the catchy, triumphant tune of Magmoor Caverns or the atmospheric techno beat that inspires curiosity and exploration in the Chozo Ruins, you get the sound of machinery. This is not a place of adventure, only work as the Space Pirates excavate the phazon that turned this area into a barren, lifeless wasteland.
As such, it's a breath of fresh air after reaching the deepest part of the mines that we can access for the time being and getting to hear different music as we navigate an electric maze in order to get Power Bombs. So not only are we now able to destroy any obstacles made of bendezium, but also any regular enemy in the game.
