MGS2: Sons Of Liberty Walkthrough Part 4: Bomb Disposal
1After witnessing Dead Cell's elimination of Navy SEALs, Raiden immediately heads into Big Shell's strut C where he encounters Peter Stillman, retired bomb disposal expert who lost his leg while trying to stop a bombing of the church five years prior, having been brought along with Navy SEALs to supervise and assist their EOD teams that were supposed to actually disarm the explosives. As Raiden continues to try and ascertain his identity, Pliskin comes in and confirms that the man interrogated by Raiden is really Stillman who reveals that another reason he was brought into the mission aside from his expertise was his previous association with member of Dead Cell responsible for the bomb threat, an explosives expert codenamed Fatman who was once Stillman's protege. With all Navy SEALs including EOD personnel eliminated by Dead Cell and explosives spread out all over Big Shell, Stillman enlists Raiden's and Pliskin's help with bomb disposal. However, since neither of them is trained for actual bomb disarmament, Stillman provides them with coolant spray meant to freeze the explosives and render them harmless for 24 hours, allowing them to be disposed of once the mission ends. In order to help them locate the bombs, Stillman also provides them with ion spectrometer sensors set to pick up on the scent of cologne used by Fatman to mark his explosives as a form of his personal "signature", intending to join them as well before being dissuaded by both Raiden and Pliskin on account of his bad leg. With the shared objective of ridding Big Shell of explosives, Raiden and Pliskin decide to split up with Pliskin heading towards Shell 2 while Raiden stays to defuse the explosives planted on Shell 1. As Raiden leaves shortly after Pliskin, Stillman comments that he is almost definitely isn't Marine, citing his improper use of Marine jargon as a giveaway, but remaining certain that he isn't co-operating with the terrorists. Soon after they start to locate and freeze the explosives, it becomes obvious that the explosives are placed in amateurish fashion uncharacteristic for Fatman with Raiden also encountering the leader of the Gurlukovich mercenaries patrolling the Big Shell, a woman named Olga Gurlukovich who somehow survived the events of Tanker incident two years prior despite having been knocked out after shootout with Solid Snake, proceeding to escape after Raiden tries to hold her up. Later, while preparing to locate the final explosive on Shell 1, Raiden is contacted by an unknown person who warns him that the bridge between struts E and F is mined with claymore mines, introducing themselves as Deepthroat before switching to Mr. X, also telling Raiden that they are "one of his fans" with Raiden recognizing the first alias as the one used by Gray Fox AKA Frank Jaeger during Shadow Moses Incident, the connection also being noted by Campbell who reveals that transmission came from Big Shell and urging Raiden to remain careful. Eventually, upon locating and freezing final explosive in strut F, Raiden contacts Pliskin and Stillman with the former having another explosive to freeze and notifying Stillman and Raiden that he found a large amount of C4 in the central core of Shell 2 that couldn't be detected by Stillman's ion spectrometer. Realizing that smaller explosives are decoys and that explosive found by Pliskin represents a real threat since its detonation in conjuction with similar explosive somewhere on Shell 1 could cause entire Big Shell to collapse, Stillman confesses to two soldiers, revealing to have faked his leg injury in order to avoid responsibility for the explosion of the church that he failed to prevent. Now filled with remorse for his deceit and aware that Fatman needs to be stopped as soon as possible, Stillman decides to join Pliskin in Shell 2 and personally disarm the explosive in its central core, urging Raiden to return to strut C in order to retrieve another bomb sensor meant to help him find the explosive left by Fatman...
