HISTORICAL SPOTLIGHT

Hernán Cortés
May 30, 1485 – December 2, 1547
Biography: Hernán Cortés led to the fall of the Aztec Empire in the early 16th century. Moctezuma II welcomed Cortés, seeing his arrival as a fulfillment of prophecy about white men in ships coming to Mexico. Cortés was aware of this prediction and took full advantage of it. He would later sire two illegitimate children, Sebastián and Leonor, with Doña Isabel Moctezuma, the daughter of Moctezuma II by way of Princess Teotlalco.
Genealogical Notes: Father of Sebastian and Leonor Cortés.

Location: Machu Picchu; Urubamba, Cuzco, Peru
Guide: Ana Llaqta; Quechua Tour Guide
Difficulty: Hard

CONDITIONS

Four Common Jewels (Jade, Rubies, Seashells, and Tiger’s Eyes) plus Spinel Crows
Five Common Jewels (Jade, Onyx Zebras, Rubies, Seashells, and Tiger’s Eyes) plus Spinel Crows (Level 30-4 and 30-5)

LEVELS

Level 30-1
Squares (Expert): 97 (96)
Expert Alterations: G1 Omitted
Ana’s Comments: “I believe that Hernán Cortés did not seek out to be a bad man. He, like so many before and after him, simply got caught up with hierarchy and greed. Unfortunately, these personality deficits led to the misfortune of far too many to even account for.”
Reward (Association): Moctezuma Piece #2 (Isabel’s father)

Level 30-2
Squares (Expert): 66 (68)
Expert Alterations: B7 and K7 Added
Ana’s Comments: “When you look out across these structures, do you see what I see? I see the expression of passion, hard work, and hope of an ancient people, manifested in stone. This strikes me as very similar to the look and feel of this missing Golden Jewel Board.”
Reward (Association): Teotlalco Piece #5 (Isabel’s mother)

Level 30-3
Squares (Expert): 75
Expert Alterations: M5 Omitted; A1 Added
Ana’s Comments: “So, now that you’ve come this far, you can clearly see that you are related to Moctezuma by blood, while Sebastian Grenard is related merely by marriage. How do you intend to prove this to the court? It seems as though you must need some more official documentation.”
Reward (Association): Teotlalco Piece #6 (Isabel’s mother)

Level 30-4
Squares (Expert): 100 (98)
Expert Alterations: A5, F3, H3, and M5 Omitted; A1 and M1 Added
Ana’s Comments: “It is not always easy for researchers and scholars to make their points accepted by the public. Often times it takes generations for an academic idea to become accepted as fact, whether out of reasonable skepticism or flagrant ignorance. I hope that delays like this do not discourage your journey.”
Reward (Association): Moctezuma Piece #3 (Isabel’s father)

Level 30-5
Squares (Expert): 112 (107)
Expert Alterations: A1, D2, G2, J2, M1 Omitted
Ana’s Comments: “You have come farther than anyone could have imagined you would. You have traveled the world, reunited with your father, and learned many things about your ancestors. A true feeling of accomplishment must fill you at this moment.”
Reward (Association): Teotlalco Piece #7 (Isabel’s mother)
