Planet Laika English Patched v1.0 Gameplay chapter 2 - The Evil Mind & Ernest the Strong
Planet Laika (プラネットライカ) is a role-playing video game developed by Quintet and Zeque for the PlayStation home game console. The game follows the main character, Laika, through a mission to Mars which forces the player to manipulate Laika's multiple-personality disorder in order to solve puzzles. All the characters in the game have dog heads, a possible reference to the Soviet space dog Laika. The game was only released in Japan.
Unlike most RPGs, which feature turn-based battles, Planet Laika's are played out almost like Space Invaders and Pong. The player must bounce around a Mind Core and reflect back the enemies' attacks to inflict damage. There are not a lot of battles in the game and enemies only attack when Laika is in one of the special forms.
The Evil Mind starts affecting the space crew including Laika himself. The first one who got heavy side effect of the fog is Noon as shown from his panicking tone and body movement followed by hallucination of his dangerous mother coming back while Tatler suddenly changed into an easily irritated and ignorant man due to the fog's effect. The one who doesn't seem to be affected here is April but is it? Either way, this is not good because after April and Laika return, the safe house's door is opened and both Tatler and Noon are gone. Now we have to find those two but....where could they be? As April went ahead to the town, a cloud of sand dust suddenly fly closer to Laika and a boy in a digging suit emerges from the Mars ground. This boy is Damian and he is a bit of a mysterious figure as you won't see him again for a long time once you entered the town. Damian tells Laika that his friends, Noon and Tatler gone ahead following their hallucination from The Evil Mind's effect. Now we know what happened to those two but for now, entering the town is a priority.
Upon arriving at Brick Road, a drunken sick purple-skinned man named Sammy comes out after giving up to open the mysterious door beside the eye symbol. When Sammy returns to the town, Laika absorbs a large amount of red aura from him which changes Laika's mind scope's color into red with an unfamiliar face replacing Laika's face in his mind scope. The Spirit Man appears and tells Laika to follow him into the mirror room. Now, this is where the gameplay concept begins...
On Mars, every character has their specific aura color (The colors are mainly red, blue, and yellow or green. Red aura came from a person of Animal type with lust for power and violence, blue aura came from a person of Psycho type with lust for knowledge, yellow or green aura came from a person of Visual type with lust for beauty) and talking to one of them will make Laika absorbs the aura from the person he is talking to. If enough specific color is absorbed (For example, often talk to a character with a blue aura), his mind scope will start turning blue and if it gets dark blue or indigo, a different face will appear on the mind scope instead of his face. This face is his other personality from the DID and each of them will be called after Laika look at himself in any mirror to solve the puzzles later (Ernest the strong as red Animal type, Spacer the eccentric nerd as blue Psycho type, Yolanda the feminist narcissistic girl as yellow Visual type). For the first introduction, Laika will change into one of the 3 characters in his DID from looking at the mirror and in this case...he turns into an Animal type personality named Ernest (An~nesto in Japanese). There's not much to do as Ernest here outside of getting the item stuck inside a rock or similar hard object which appears as a yellow glint with a single punch due to his strong Animal type (Any color outside of yellow means that the glint is a key item for a specific purpose later on). When Ernest talks to Spirit Man blocking the way back to the rocket from Brick Road area, Spirit Man tells Ernest to return to the mirror room and an entity called "Phase" appears much to Ernest's surprise. Phase can only be beaten using the concept of Pong with the Mind Core moved left, right, or retract the Core near the character to deflect the incoming shots generated by Phase back to it. With Phase entity defeated, Ernest can now change back to Laika with Spirit Man's help (This is useful if one of the persona's Evil Meter has low health because Mars's Phase only attack Laika when he is as one of the 3 personas from his DID)
Note about the game: There is no game over as the game over only occur if Laika's persona Evil Meter gone zero or if Laika's mind scope was overloaded by one type of Evil (Last I tested was game over from filling one of the 3 person figures of Laika's mind scope with blue aura completely which Laika permanently turn into Spacer but this time, Spacer comes out from the door with white light and the screen just appear as Game Over after several flashing. Epilepsy alert for the flashings, my eyes hate it). I don't get it for the Game Over section to be honest.
Enjoy :-)
